Murphy Dropkicks Snappers to Fifth Straight Loss
August 8, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, WI- The Beloit Snappers suffered their fifth loss in a row as they fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernels by a score of 7-2 on Thursday night in Midwest League action, with 1096 in the grandstands of Pohlman Field.
This loss brings Beloit down to a record of 65-51 (22-24 in second half) and brings Cedar Rapids to 69-45 (29-17 in second half).
The Snappers got on the scoreboard first when they loaded the bases off starter Tim Atherton. (6-4) Christopher Bostick grounded out to score Brett Vertigan, and Renato Nunez singled to tally Aaron Shipman (2-3, BB, SB), whose two hits and a walk improved his on-base streak to 34 games. That was all that Atherton allowed, holding the Snappers to two runs over five innings of work, while striking out four.
The Kernels responded in the following inning when Jorge Polanco doubled in Niko Goodrum, and Adam Brett Walker doubled to push across Polanco, evening the score at two. Later in the inning, Cedar Rapids loaded the bags with nobody out, bringing up Joel Licon, who rapped out an RBI single. Two batters later, Jonathan Murphy (2-4, 2B, 3B, 4 RBI's) doubled to clear the bases, extending the Cedar Rapids lead to 6-2. That knocked Derek DeYoung (5-5) out of the game after going four innings. In the next frame, Murphy added to the lead with a run scoring triple to plate Licon.
Beloit was stifled by the Kernels' bullpen, as they only mustered one baserunner after the fifth inning. Alex Muren threw three perfect innings, and then Brian Gilbert tossed a scoreless ninth. The game ended, fittingly, with a sliding catch by Murphy, in shallow center field.
Friday, the Snappers look to take the last game of the homestand, and will be doing so with RHP Dylan Covey (0-1, 5.09 ERA) going up against RHP Tim Shibuya (1-0, 0.90 ERA). First pitch will be thrown at 7:00pm. On Friday, early arrivals to the ballpark will be treated to a Snappers autograph baseball giveaway, courtesy of First Community Credit Union. The first 500 fans through the gate will receive a mystery Snappers autographed baseball. Gates open at 6:00pm, so make sure you visit the box office or Snappersbaseball.com for ticket information.
