Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-The Lake County Captains scored three runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Dayton Dragons 3-2 on Thursday night at Fifth Third Field. The teams have split the first two games of the series with the rubber match set for Friday night.
The loss dropped the Dragons to 25-22 in the second half. They are three games out of the wildcard spot and three and one-half games out of first place in the Midwest League's Eastern Division with 23 games to play.
Lake County finished the game with only three hits but they capitalized on their lone opportunity in the eighth inning to come back from a 2-0 deficit. An error, walk, and sacrifice bunt left runners at second and third with one out, and Aaron Siliga delivered a two-run single to center field to tie the game. After another base hit and a walk, Zach MacPhee's sacrifice fly brought in Siliga with the go-ahead run.
The Dragons had a chance to tie the game or take the lead in the bottom of the eighth. Jeff Gelalich walked and with one out, Jesse Winker blasted a double off the right-center field fence. Gelalich tried to score from first on the play but was tagged out at the plate after an effective relay. Winker went to third on an infield single by Seth Mejias-Brean, but Tanner Rahier struck out swinging to end the threat. In the ninth, the Dragons got a two-out infield single from Zach Vincej, but Sammy Diaz flied out to deep right to end the game.
The Dragons took a quick lead when Diaz led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run to right field, his third homer of the year. They added a run in the fourth when Winker doubled off the left field fence, went to third on Mejias-Brean's bloop single to right, and scored on Rahier's long sacrifice fly to the warning track in left to make it 2-0.
Lake County had just one hit over the first seven innings. Dragons starting pitcher Ismael Guillon worked five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with five walks and four strikeouts. Tony Amezcua followed Guillon and tossed two innings, allowing no hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Jesus Adames (2-3) was charged with the loss. He allowed all three runs in the eighth inning. Two of the runs were unearned.
The Dragons collected 10 hits. Winker had two doubles. Mejias-Brean had three hits including a double. Vincej had two hits.
Dragons pitchers walked 10 and struck out 10 in the game. Lake County stranded 11 and went 1 for 9 with men in scoring position. Siliga's two-run single was the big hit.
The Dragons host the Captains on Friday at Fifth Third Field at 7:05 p.m. Nick Travieso (5-3, 5.10) will start for the Dragons against Lake County's Jake Sisco (4-9, 4.39).
