LANSING, Mich. - Jason King hit a go-ahead single in the top of the ninth to give the West Michigan Whitecaps (23-21, 56-58) a 5-4 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (18-29, 50-66) in a see-saw affair in front of 8,101 fans at Cooley Law School Stadium on Thursday night.

With the game in a 4-4 deadlock in the top of the ninth, the Whitecaps put runners on the corners with one out against Griffin Murphy (Loss, 0-3). King shot a single off the end of his bat and into left field, scoring Jeff Holm from third to give West Michigan the game-winning run.

The Lugs made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth inning, getting runners on the corners with one out against closer Corey Knebel. However, a groundout and a lineout ended the ballgame, with the Lugs leading the game-tying and game-winning runs on third and second base respectively.

Before that, the Whitecaps were able to draw even in the top of the eighth on a solo home run by Dean Green, his second homer of the game.

Green slugged his first homer in the top of the second inning, a two-run shot giving the Whitecaps a 2-1 lead at the time.

Lansing came back to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning before surrendering the game in the final two frames.

Trailing 3-2, Jordan Leyland singled up the middle, scoring Christian Lopes from second and bringing the Lugs equal with the Whitecaps at 3-3. The next batter, Emilio Guerrero laced a single to right, scoring Carlos Ramirez and giving the Lugnuts the go-ahead run.

In the losing effort, both Lopes and Guerrero had multi-hit games and each drove in a run.

Lugnuts' starter Ben White battled through five innings on the mound, surrendering three runs - all earned - on four hits. The 24-year old walked four and struck out three West Michigan hitters.

Edgar De La Rosa took a no-decision for the Whitecaps, pitching five solid innings in the start. The right-hander allowed two runs - only one earned - on just four Lansing hits. While issuing one walk, he struck out seven hitters, his second highest total this season.

Chad Smith (Win, 4-4) earned the win, pitching two scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth innings.

The three-game series closes out on Friday night at Cooley Law School Stadium on a Flat Screen Friday presented by Auto-Owners Insurance with postgame LAFCU Fireworks. With first pitch set for 7:05 p.m., Lansing's Daniel Norris (1-7, 5.13) will take the mound against West Michigan's Jake Thompson (2-3, 3.16).
