Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A pair of two-run home runs lifted the Quad Cities River Bandits to a 4-1 victory Saturday evening against the Cedar Rapids Kernels in front of 3,224 fans at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The River Bandits (55-26) have leads of 4-1 this series and 13-4 in the season series over the Kernels (45-38) going into Sunday afternoon's tilt.
Saturday's scoring started in the third when Cedar Rapids claimed a 1-0 edge. Max Smith hit a leadoff single and advanced to second base on a wild pitch to Kyle Schmidt. Smith later scored on Alex Isola's two-out RBI single.
Quad Cities surged in front within the middle innings while building a 4-1 advantage. Logan Porter hit a two-run blast during the fourth to put the River Bandits in front. Maikel Garcia added his own two-run shot in the top of the fifth.
Although the Kernels were unable to get a comeback started, Wander Javier provided some excitement with a seventh-inning triple. Javier's nine total three-baggers leave him tied with Wisconsin Timber Rattlers outfielder Joe Gray Jr. for tops in Minor League Baseball.
Christian Cosby (3-2) allowed just one run over a career-high-tying five innings pitched within a winning performance. Nathan Webb and Will Klein each tallied two scoreless innings of relief. Webb notched his first hold, and Klein earned his third save.
Tyler Beck (2-2) tossed a personal-best six innings but also conceded four runs to end up in the loss column. Breckin Williams and Andrew Cabezas combined for three perfect innings out of the bullpen.
Sunday's series finale is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Kernels right-hander Cody Laweryson (0-3, 4.97) and River Bandits right-hander C.J. Eldred (0-0, -.--) will be the starting pitchers, and Chris Kleinhans-Schulz will call the contest on www.kernels.com and MiLB.TV.
The Kernels, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois, will host the annual Kids Heroes recognition ceremony sponsored by O'Brien Family McDonald's. Kids Eat Free Sunday presented by Great Clips and Z102.9 is also on tap along with Baseball Bingo courtesy of the Ox Yoke Inn and the chance for kids to run the bases and play catch in the outfield following the homestand finale.
