Peoria Chiefs News Release
GAME ONE:
South Bend, IN. -- The South Bend Cubs scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the Chiefs 8-3 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. Game one was completed Saturday afternoon after being suspended in the bottom of the seventh Friday night.
After Leonardo Taveras worked through a clean seventh inning, he allowed the first two batters to reach to kick off the eighth. Kevin Marnon then allowed three straight reaches and the Cubs were able to extend their lead. They sent all nine men to the plate in the eighth inning en route to the win.
GAME TWO:
On the strength of three home runs, South Bend knocked off the Chiefs 10-6 in the regularly scheduled contest.
It was a seesaw affair early in the evening. The Chiefs got on the board first in the second inning when Leandro Cedeno homered to right field, his eighth of the year. South Bend responded in the bottom half of the inning by scoring three times, including a two-run homer from Josue Huma to make it 3-1.
The Chiefs answered right back with two runs of their own in the top of the third. After Masyn Winn reached on a walk, he swiped second and third to move into scoring position. Following a free pass to Jordan Walker, Chandler Redmond recorded an infield hit to score Winn and make it 3-2. Winn stole three bases on the night, tied with Brendan Donovan for the most in a single game this season. Later in the inning, Matt Koperniak singled home Walker and the game was knotted up yet again, 3-3.
South Bend again answered immediately following the Chiefs two-run third. Alexander Canario, who was acquired in the Kris Bryant trade from San Francisco, hit his first home run with South Bend to make it 4-3. A solo shot from Bryce Ball pushed the lead to 5-3.
It was 6-3 South Bend entering the seventh before the Cubs put the game away with a four-run frame. Six straight Cubs hitters reached, which included four consecutive singles, and the Cubs pulled ahead 10-3.
In the ninth, the Chiefs worked three walks and an Aaron Antonini RBI single made it 10-6, which sent the tying-run to plate. Zade Richardson was retired, however, and the Peoria rally fell short.
The series concludes tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. Mac Lardner is on the mound for Peoria.
