South Bend Cubs News Release
The South Bend Cubs evened up their series with the Peoria Chiefs after a 8-3 victory on Saturday in a continuation of a game that was suspended in the seventh inning on Friday night.
Joe Nahas got the start on the hill and matched a career high he set last week by tossing 5.2 innings, he allowed just three runs and struck out six.
Scott Kobos pitched both innings in the resumption of the game and went two perfect innings while striking out four. The Cubs struck for five runs in the eighth to take the lead and put the game away. A bases-loaded walk to Bryce Windham brought home what wound up being the game-winning run.
Harrison Wenson hit his first homer in the Cubs farm system and drove in four runs in the win between his two-run homer in the fourth and a two-run double to score a pair of insurance runs in the eighth.
It was another great game for Windham in his hot start since coming off the IL. He reached three times, going 1-for-1 with two walks, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Saturday's game:
W: Dalton Stambaugh (2-0, 4.20 ERA)
L: Logan Gragg (2-4, 5.89 ERA)
It was all about the home run ball for the Cubs in game two on Saturday night.
Josue Huma left the yard on a two-run bomb to right in the second inning that put the Cubs ahead, 3-1. After Peoria came back tied it, Alexander Canario smoked one 450 feet to left center field, his first homer since being acquired at the trade deadline in the Kris Bryant deal. Just two batters later Bryce Ball crushed his first homer at Four Winds Field and the Cubs were quickly back in front by two, 5-3 the score.
The Cubs added a run in the sixth and then appeared to blow Peoria away with a four-run seventh that included six-straight batters reaching base and three-straight RBI singles from the likes of Jake Slaughter, Bryce Windham and Dean Nevarez.
Chris Clarke made his home debut on the mound for South Bend and tossed 4.2 innings while allowing three earned runs on six hits and a walk, and striking out seven. Dalton Stambaugh was the first man out of the pen and shoved 3.1 scoreless innings.
Peoria entered the ninth inning trailing 10-3. The Chiefs scored three runs in the ninth and brought the game-tying run to the plate but lost 10-6 after a ground out to third that ended it.
Next Up: Alexander Vizcaino (0-1, 9.45 ERA) will make his first start in the Cubs farm system for Sunday's series finale and Mac Lardner (0-3, 5.14 ERA) will take the hill for the Chiefs.
