Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH) - The Lake County Captains (44-39) fell behind early and could not claw their way back in a 5-2 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts (40-43) on Saturday night at Classic Park.
Lansing got on the board in the top of the first inning. Cobie Vance led off the game with a single to right center. He moved to second on a soft groundout to third base by Jordan Díaz. Another soft ground ball in the direction of third base went as an infield single for William Simoneit after a bobble by Victor Nova at third base. With runners on the corners Jared McDonald hit a high fly ball to right field that drove in Vance for the go-ahead Lansing run as they took a 1-0 lead.
Lester Madden Jr. walked to open the second inning for the Lugnuts. He advanced to second on a swinging bunt groundout by Yerdel Vargas. With two outs Marcos Brito ripped a double to the right-center gap to drive in Madden Jr. With Vance up, Captains starter Hunter Gaddis balked, moving Brito to third. Then a passed ball by catcher Joe Donovan allowed Brito to score, putting Lansing ahead 3-0.
The Captains cut into the Lugnuts lead in the bottom of the third inning. Julian Escobedo looped a single down the left field line to leadoff the inning. After two groundouts moved Escobedo to third, George Valera walked to put runners on the corners.
Lake County pulled within one in the fourth. Donovan tripled to right field with one out. Quentin Holmes then pulled an infield single into the shortstop hole to score Donovan and cut Lansing's lead to 3-2.
In the top of the seventh, Lansing produced two insurance runs. Brito walked with one out to flip the lineup to the top of the order. Vance was up and he blasted a two-run home run to left field to go up 5-3.
Shohei Tomioka (4-5) received the win after allowing one run in 3.1 innings out of the bullpen. He allowed three hits with four strikeouts.
