PRINCE GEORGE, BC - The Prince George Cougars are excited to announce that forward Riley Heidt (05) has signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Minnesota Wild. Heidt was selected 64th overall by the Wild in the 2023 NHL Draft in Nashville.
"It's super exciting for me and my family. There has been a lot of hard work since I was a little kid. This is another step to reaching my dream. I can't thank my teammates, coaches, and staff around me who have developed me as a player. That being said, there's big things ahead right now with our team here and now I'm just focused on that."
Turning 19 on Monday, Heidt has amassed an impressive season with the Prince George Cougars, setting records along the way. The Saskatoon, SK native tallied an outstanding 114 points with 34 goals and 80 assists in 65 games, solidifying his position as the Cougars' all-time points leader and setting a new record for most assists by a Cougar in team history.
"They (Minnesota) are such a great organization. They have treated me so well and I can't thank them enough. I'm always trying to get as much feedback as I can from them at all times and doing what I can to prove myself each and every day," added Heidt.
Selected second overall in the 202 WHL Prospects Draft by the Cougars, Heidt has proven to be a remarkable player for the organization. In 220 WHL games, Heidt boasts 277 points, including 82 goals and 195 assists.
"It was only a matter of time," commented GM & Head Coach Mark Lamb. "He's a very motivated player who leads our team in many categories on and off the ice. He's a special person who takes great pride in being the best he can be."
Tonight, Heidt and the Cougars will conclude their regular season schedule against the Kamloops Blazers at 6:00 pm for Retro Night at the CN Centre. The evening also marks the final Mega 50/50 Jackpot of the season, with a guaranteed jackpot of $50,000.
