Hawks Stretch Point Streak to Nine Games in Kennewick

March 23, 2024 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

Josh Zakreski (1G, 1A), Diego Buttazzoni (1G, 1A) and Nate Danielson (2A) each tallied two points as the Winterhawks stretched their team point streak to nine games (7-0-2-0), but a Jordan Gavin breakaway bid in overtime helped the Americans take the extra point on Friday.

Portland's record now stands at 46-15-4-1 on the year (97pts, 2nd Western Conference).

Nearing the midway point of the extra frame, neither team threatened heavily until Parker Bell sprung Gavin on a breakaway, and the 2025 NHL Draft prospect made no mistake.

Bell assisted on the game's opening goal as well, setting up Deagan McMillan at 7:33 of the first period. Portland responded with two tallies in the final five minutes of the frame, with impressive net-front efforts by Diego Buttazzoni and Marcus Nguyen to take a lead into the intermission.

Tri-City pushed back in the second period, though, taking the lead with a power-play goal by Cruz Pavao and a lucky bounce from Mason Finley. Chasing the game in the third, Zakreski came through in the clutch with a rebound marker in the final minutes of play, knotting things up at three for the Hawks and setting the stage for OT.

Jan Špunar finished with 10 saves on 14 shots in his 12th straight start for Portland. Kyle Kelsey earned first-star honors for Tri-City, making 49 saves on 52 shots in his fourth consecutive appearance.

The Winterhawks wrap up the regular season with a home-and-home against Seattle this weekend, starting tomorrow night on home ice at 6:00 P.M.
