Spokane Chiefs News Release
Seattle, Wash. - The Chiefs made the drive down I-90 to face the Seattle Thunderbirds on Friday night for the final time this season in game 67 of the Chiefs' season. 16-year-old Kaden Allan made his WHL debut, taking the place in the lineup of scratched defenseman Saige Weinstein, after receiving the call-up for the closing stretch of the season.
The first period was quick and fairly uneventful with no penalties or goals to speak of. Seattle led the shot count 10-7 but neither team looked like scoring.
The action would pick up drastically in the second. Matching minors after a short scuffle resulted in two minutes of four-on-four action followed by three straight penalties whistled against the Chiefs. The Thunderbirds would make the 2-man advantage count, scoring a power play goal from Mynio at 18:12. Shots were 14 each in the period with both teams forcing strong saves from the goaltenders.
Seattle would open the third with their second goal of the night less than a minute into the period. Cootes picked up his second assist of the night on a cross-crease feed to Lovsin for the goal.
The Chiefs would have a man advantage several times in the third period, but the league's 7th best power play unit could not break through. It was not until the 18:14 mark that Spokane would finally find the net.
After a deflected zone entry, Chase Bertholet picked up the puck and weaved through the defense before blasting home the goal, giving Spokane life with under two minutes to play. It was an uncharacteristic blue line turnover from Berkly Catton that ultimately doomed the Chiefs, providing Seattle's Gustafson the opportunity to finish into an empty net, making it 3-1.
Cowan turned in another strong appearance in net, making 35 saves while Spokane went 2/3 on the penalty kill.
Up next Spokane will travel to Tri-City for the final regular season game of the season Saturday night.
Playoff packages are available now. Package holders can check their email for a special link to reserve their seats for playoffs, with single game tickets going on sale to the general public on Tuesday morning.
