Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
BOWIE, MD - Joel Guzman's three-run home run off of Richmond reliever Daniel Turpen in the bottom the eighth inning pulled Bowie from a 4-2 deficit and propelled them to a 5-4 victory in game three of a four-game series at Prince George's Stadium on Saturday night.
With Richmond leading 4-2, Turpen began his first appearance of the season by striking out Miguel Abreu. Robbie Widlansky and Brandon Waring each followed with singles however, setting the stage for Guzman. His three-run drive over the wall in left field was the difference in the ballgame, and also the first home run allowed in Richmond team history.
Richmond had jumped on Bowie starter Chorye Spoone and out front early, plating a lone run in the first inning. Darren Ford got the Squirrels started with a double down the left field line on the first pitch of the ballgame. He advanced to third on Brandon Crawford's single and scored when Conor Gillaspie added a single to put Richmond ahead, 1-0. Spoone, who allowed the run without recording an out, responded to escape the inning without further damage.
Squirrels' starter Daryl Maday looked sharp in retiring the side in order in the first, but ignited a Bowie rally by walking lead off batter Brandon Waring in the second. Joel Guzman followed the walk with a single and Caleb Joseph tied the game with a double just inside the third base line that rolled to the left field corner. A batter later, Blake Davis grounded into a double-play, but Guzman came in to give Bowie the lead, 2-1.
The Flying Squirrels tied the game in the fourth when Nick Noonan led off against Spoone with a double off the wall in right-center field. He was sacrificed to third and came home to knot the score, 2-2, when Clay Timpner sprayed a single to right field.
Spoone departed after four innings, and Conor Gillaspie put Richmond back in front off his successor, Pedro Beato, in the sixth. With two outs, Gillaspie sent a low-flying solo home run to right-center field for a 3-2 lead. The drive marked the first home run in franchise history for Richmond and the first of the season for Gillaspie.
Maday departed having allowed just the two runs after five innings. Jake Stevens entered and worked two scoreless innings through the seventh. Richmond added a run in the eighth inning, when Gillaspie's sacrifice fly scored Timpner for a 4-2 advantage. Gillaspie finished the night with three runs batted in, including his historic home run.
Turpen (0-1) was tagged with the loss, having allowed Guzman's home run and four total hits in a lone inning of work. Chad Thall (1-0) earned the win for Bowie after finishing the eighth inning. Wilfrido Perez allowed Richmond to load the bases in the ninth, but struck out Ford to end the game and earn his first save of the season.
The series will conclude on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 PM at Prince George's Stadium. Richmond will send RHP David Mixon (0-0, 0.00) looking for a series split against RHP Ryohei Tanaka (0-0, 0.00) for Bowie.
