Emaus Haunts Rock Cats
April 10, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Britain Rock Cats News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT - New Hampshire's Brad Emaus has been a thorn in New Britain's side since arriving in the Eastern League last season. Emaus delivered another blow on Saturday night as he crushed a two-run homer in the seventh inning to put the finishing touch on a 5-3 victory over the Rock Cats at New Britain Stadium.
For the second game in a row, the Fisher Cats jumped on the Rock Cats starting pitcher - this time scoring three runs off of Michael McCardell. New Hampshire took advantage of two free passes by McCardell to open the inning. David Cooper's groundout back to the mound allowed both runners to advance before a routine grounder fielded by shortstop Estarlin de los Santos resulted in a throwing error and a run for the Fisher Cats. McCardell then unleashed a wild pitch that allowed both runners to move into scoring position. With still just one out, Eric Thames hammered a line drive into right field to knock in both runners for a 3-0 advantage. The Fisher Cats looked to tack on another run when Adam Calderone singled to center fielder Ben Revere, but Revere fired a throw to catcher Danny Lehmann to nail Thames at the plate. Revere had a big night for the Rock Cats on the offensive end as well, finishing with two hits and two walks and swiping his first stolen base.
The Rock Cats got on the board in the second when first baseman Chris Parmelee launched his first Double-A home run over the right field wall to lead off the inning.
Fisher Cats' starter Zach Stewart (1-0) didn't allow another run to the Rock Cats' lineup and finished with one run on four hits through five innings. He struck out three.
The Rock Cats closed the gap in the sixth against reliever Edward Buzachero. Rene Tosoni delivered a one-out single and moved to second on Buzachero's errant pickoff attempt. Juan Portes flew out to center field for the second out of the inning before Parmelee lined a double into right field to score Tosoni and bring the Rock Cats within one run, 3-2.
Tim Collins (Worcester, MA) struck out five in 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief for the Fisher Cats. Danny Farquhar notched his second save of the season.
McCardell (0-1) walked four and allowed four hits and three earned runs in four innings of work. The Rock Cats look to pick up their first win of the season as the two teams close out the rain-shortened three-game series on Sunday afternoon.
