TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Bowie Baysox will meet in game three of a four-game series...After falling
in their inaugural game 6-4, the Flying Squirrels got a stellar start from left-hander Clayton Tanner and recorded the first win in franchise history in shutout fashion, 2-0, over the Baysox in seven innings on Friday night.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Right-hander Daryl Maday gets the start for the Flying Squirrels in game three of the four-game series...Making his first appearance against Bowie in 30 EL contests...Spent all of 2009 with Double-A CON...Went 6-6 with a 4.25 ERA in a team and career-high 25 starts...Allowed 149H in 135.2 IP (.284 BAA)...67K/44BB...Was 1-1 with a 2.35 ERA in 5GS in April...Made 5 straight quality starts 7/10-8/6 (2-0, 1.91 ERA)...Went 0-4 with a 7.79 ERA (28ER/32.1 IP) in 7SG against POR & REA...Posted a 6-2 mark with a 3.14 ERA (36ER/103.1 IP) in 18GS against the rest of the EL...Made two post-season starts, allowing 8R/7ER on 12H in 9.1 IP (6.75 ERA)...Is 7-7 with a 4.73 ERA in 29G/28GS in the EL...Had a stellar showing with Low-A AUG to start 2008 going 9-4 with a 1.55 ERA in 21G/13GS and earning SAL All-Star honors...Promoted to Double-A CON and went 1-1 with a 8.35 ERA in 4G/3GS before being sent down to Adv-A SJG where he ended the season going 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA in 4GS...Selected in the 30th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft...Attended the University of Arkansas...Originally selected by MIL in the 43rd round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft.
Right-hander Chorye Spoone gets the nod in game three of the series for the Baysox...Member of BAL 40-man roster...Made 10 starts in 2009 at three different levels (Rookie, SS-A, Adv-A) coming back from shoulder surgery in 2008...Allowed 22R/21ER in 29.2 IP (6.37 ERA)...26K/19BB...Made only 9 starts with Double-A BOW in 2008 going 3-3 with a 4.57 ERA before being shut down for the remainder of the season...Went 10-9 with a 3.26 ERA in 26G/25GS with Adv-A FRE in 2007...Tossed 3CG...Finished 2nd in the CAR with 133 strikeouts in 152.0 IP while walking 67...Named CLCS MVP after guiding FRE to the CAR championship...Went 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA (2ER/18.0 IP)...Struck out 17 batters and walked one...Spent 2007 with Low-A DEL and went 7-9 with a 3.56 ERA in 26G/25GS...90K/80BB in 129.0 IP...Named SAL mid season All-Star...Selected in the 8th round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft...Attended Catonsville Community College (MD).
TAKING THE FORD FOR A SPIN: Darren Ford wasted little time showing off his speed in the Eastern League...The 24-year-old reached base for the first time in 2010 with a leadoff single in the top of the third inning and stole second and third base before being stranded there...It was the 52nd multi-stolen base performance for Ford who is in his 6th professional season...Ford only had 4 multi-stolen base games with Adv-A SJG in 2009 and didn't record his first until July 27th...The centerfield swiped a single-game, career-high 5 stolen bases on May 5, 2008, while with Adv-A BRE in the Milwaukee Brewers organization...The New Jersey-native entered the 2010 with 251 stolen bases in his career in 310 attempts...Put together three consecutive 60-plus stolen base seasons from 2006-2008...Rated as the fastest baserunner in the SFG organization according to Baseball America.
GETTING DEFENSIVE: The Flying Squirrels have played excellent defense through the first two games of the 2010 season...Richmond has throw out three Bowie baserunners at home including an outfield assist from Roger Kieschnick and a pair of assists from third baseman Connor Gillaspie...The Flying Squirrels have turned two double plays including a 5-2-3 DP with the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning...Jackson Williams has also gunned down the only would-be base stealer...Richmond is one of three teams to have not committed an error through two games (Akron & Binghamton)...Last season, Adv-A SJG led the California League with a .976 fielding percentage, committing 128 errors in 140 games - 22 errors fewer than any other CL team...14 members of the Flying Squirrels 24-man roster spent time with SJG last season.
CATCH THEM IF YOU CAN: Richmond catchers Jackson Williams and Tyler LaTorre have made solid offensive contributions through the first two games...The two have combined to go 4-for-6 with four doubles and have driven in half of the Flying Squirrels' six runs scored.
