New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
New Britain, CT- Brad Emaus blasted his first home run of the season and drove in three runs, and Zach Stewart allowed only one run over five innings as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats improved to 2-0 on the year with a 5-3 victory over the New Britain Rock Cats on Saturday night at New Britain Stadium.
Emaus (1-for-3, HR, BB, 3 RBI, 2 R) launched a two-out, two-run shot off Joe Testa in the top of the seventh inning, increasing the Fisher Cats' lead from 3-2 to 5-2, which provided enough insurance to help Stewart claim a victory in his New Hampshire debut.
Stewart (1-0) worked five innings, allowing one run on four hits. The righty struck out three and walked one.
Danny Farquhar shook off a walk to pitch a scoreless ninth for his second save in as many chances.
For the second straight game in the series, the Fisher Cats (2-0) jumped out to a first-inning lead. Darin Mastroianni (0-for-3, 2 BB, SB, R) and Calix Crabbe (0-for-3, 2 BB, 2 R) drew back-to-back walks off losing pitcher Mike McCardell. Emaus drove in Mastroianni with a grounder that was misplayed for an error by shortstop Estarlin de los Santos, and Eric Thames (1-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) ripped a two-run double into the right field corner, giving New Hampshire a 3-0 lead.
New Britain (0-2) got one back in the home half of the second when Chris Parmelee (2-for-4, HR, 2B, 2 RBI) connected for a solo homer, his first, on a payoff pitch from Stewart, trimming the Fisher Cats' lead to 3-1.
Parmalee's sixth inning double off Bubbie Buzachero drove in Rene Tosoni, who walked, cutting New Hampshire's lead to 3-2.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Tim Collins issued a bases-loaded walk to Tosoni (2-for-3, BB, RBI), allowing an inherited run to score. But the left-hander rebounded by fanning four straight hitters, notching five strikeouts over 1.2 innings before handing the ball to Farquhar for the ninth.
McCardell (0-1) yielded three runs -two earned- on four hits in four innings, walking four.
The Fisher Cats send right-hander Marty McLeary (0-0, 0.00) to the mound against Rock Cats left-hander Tyler Robertson (0-0, 0.00) in the series finale Sunday afternoon at 1:35pm. Radio coverage gets underway at 1:15pm with Bob Lipman and Mike Murphy on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.
United Way Opening Day at Merchantsauto.com Stadium is scheduled for Thursday, April 15, when the Fisher Cats host the Binghamton Mets at 6:35pm. For tickets and information, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
