Richmond Game Night

January 23, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Richmond Renegades News Release

TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: The second of three meetings and the second of two here. Richmond beat the Inferno 4-1 in October. Nick Lent and Richard Pitirri each had a goal and assist. The ‘Gades are 2-0 vs. the Inferno all-time at home. The ‘Gades are in a fifth place tie with Trenton in the Northeast Division, one point behind fourth place Reading. The Inferno is second in the Southeast, trailing Pee Dee by four points.

LAST ACTION: The ‘Gades lost 8-3 at Roanoke last Saturday. The ‘Gades rallied from a 4-0 second period deficit to cut the Roanoke lead to 4-3 on three straight goals by Jon Zion. Roanoke responded with four third period goals and finished the night with six power play scores. Richmond had 60 penalty minutes. Dan Carlson scored twice for Roanoke. Columbia edged Greenville 4-3 on the road Saturday. Barrie Moore had two goals for the Inferno.

‘GADES NOTES: Renegade goaltender Dan Lombard was the co-Outstanding Goaltender in the ECHL Skills Competition. He stopped 12 of 13 shots in the All Star Game and earned the win. Jamie Herrington had a goal and assist in the All Star Game and Jon Zion added a goal. This was the fifth straight year at least one Renegade has had a point in the All Star Game. The ‘Gades have won three straight home games, outscoring the opposition 14-3. Richmond allowed six power play goals in Saturday's loss at Roanoke. That equals the second most in ECHL history but is not a club record. The ‘Gades allowed an ECHL record seven vs. Hampton Roads in October, 1993. Jon Zion netted a natural hat trick in the second period Saturday. It was Zion's first pro hat trick and the club's fourth of the year. Lars Pettersen missed Saturday's game due to injury but is expected to play this week. Pettersen has 10 points in his last five games. The Renegades Marc Magliarditi now has 125 career ECHL wins, seventh best in league history. Magliarditi had a stretch of over 111 consecutive scoreless minutes end in the third period Wednesday. Jayme Filipowicz remains on re-call to St. John. Former ‘Gade Justin Plamondon has re-joined Binghamton of the AHL. Six ‘Gades have played in the AHL this season. The ‘Gades have not allowed a power play goal in their last six wins. They have allowed 16 power play goals in their last five losses. Richmond has lost their last three overtime/shootout decisions after winning their first seven. The eight goals surrendered at Roanoke is the most since a 9-2 loss at Cincinnati last January. Richmond is 0-10-2 in their last 12 games vs. Northeast Division opponents. The ‘Gades fell from fifth in the league in penalty killing to 12th following the loss at Roanoke. Richmond took just one minor penalty for two minutes in the win over Wheeling, then had a season high 60 PIM in the loss at Roanoke. The ‘Gades are fourth in the ECHL in fewest shots allowed and tied for fourth in shorthanded goals with 10. Jon Zion and Brad Church have points in three straight games.

INFERNO NOTES: Columbia has won a club record six straight games. The Inferno has two of the ECHL's top 10 scorers. Rejean Stringer is fifth and Justin Morrison is tied for 10th. Patrick Couture leads the league in goals against average. The Inferno leads the league in penalty killing (87.2%). The Inferno is fifth in the league in scoring (3.7). Stringer, Morrison, and Corey Hessler played for the Southern Conference at the All Star Game.

NEXT UP: The ‘Gades visit Roanoke tomorrow night at 7:35 (7:20 100.3). Richmond hosts Reading Saturday at 7:35. The Inferno is back home tomorrow night vs. Augusta.
