Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
July 3, 2009 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announce that RHP Kyle Hurst will join the Kernels from Triple-A Salt Lake. Abe Flores, Director of Player Development for the LA Angels, announced the move on Wednesday.
The Angels selected Hurst, 23, in the 38th round of the 2008 Free Agent Draft out of South Mountain Community College in Phoenix, AZ. He split time between Orem and the AZL Angels, with a combined record on 3-2 and 3.92 ERA in 16 games (five starts) with one complete game. In 39 IP, he allowed 36 hits and 22 runs (17 earned) with 45 strikeouts against just 10 walks. He is the son of former Major League pitcher, Bruce Hurst.
Hurst appeared in one game with Orem and Salt Lake this year with no record and a 9.00 ERA in a combined 3 IP, allowing four hits and three runs with two walks and four strikeouts.
To make room on the Kernels active roster, MWL All-Star Mike Kohn has been promoted to Rancho Cucamonga of the California League.
Hurst will join the team in Beloit and will be active and available for tonight's 7:00 pm game with the Snappers. With today's transactions, the Kernels roster is at the MWL maximum of 25 active players, with three players currently on the DL.
The playoff-bound Kernels wrap up a four game series with the Beloit Snappers tonight in Beloit and return to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, July 4th to open a ten game home stand. Tickets may be purchased on-line at www.kernels.com
