Putkonen Shuts Out Silver Hawks

July 3, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - In front of a season-high crowd of 6,350, the Silver Hawks looked to follow up last night's thrilling victory with another impressive performance. However, West Michigan starter Luke Putkonen stole the show as the Whitecaps defeated South Bend 10-0 Friday night.

Putkonen (WP, 5-4) went the distance, throwing a complete game shut-out, giving up only five hits while striking out five and walking one, throwing less than 100 pitches on the night.

Putkonen had performed poorly in his previous two starts against South Bend, going 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA. The only Silver Hawk threat on Friday, however, came in the bottom of the third when Isaias Asencio reached on a catcher's interference and advanced to third on a single by Victor Estevez. Putkonen then induced a double play ball from Alfredo Marte to end the inning and cruised for the rest of the night.

The Whitecaps broke the game open with a three run top of the third against South Bend starter Ryan Cook (LP, 5-7). Avisail Garcia led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second when catcher Angel Flores singled to right. Gustavo Nunez then laid down a bunt that was thrown errantly by third baseman Justin Parker, allowing Garcia to score while advancing Flores and Nunez. Bryan Pounds followed with a sacrifice fly to score Flores, and Nowlin added a base hit to plate Nunez and give the Whitecaps a 3-0 lead.

West Michigan continued to add insurance runs the rest of the way. With one out in the top of the sixth, Ben Guez doubled to left-center and scored on an RBI single by Alden Carrithers to make it 4-0. The Whitecaps piled on with six more runs in the top of the ninth off Yonata Ortega (ND). Pounds, Nowlin, Jordan Lennerton, Guez, and Carrithers all picked up RBIs in the inning to put the contest out of reach.

Victor Capellan (ND) threw two shutout innings in relief, while Justin Mace (ND) added one of his own. Offensively, Victor Estevez and Marc Krauss paced the Silver Hawks with two hits apiece.

The Silver Hawks will now travel to Lansing for a four game series with the Lugnuts beginning Saturday at 7:05 PM Eastern Time. LHP Taylor Sinclair (2-3, 3.75 ERA) gets the starting nod for South Bend, with Lansing sending RHP Chase Lirette (3-0, 1.87 ERA) to the mound. Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 PM on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
