Cougars Set Ballpark Record but Lose
July 3, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - On the field the Kane County Cougars lost to the Peoria Chiefs, 7-1. Off the field the Cougars set a new single-game Elfstrom Stadium record and single-game Midwest League stadium record, as a crowd of 14,872 fans was on hand to see the intra-state rivals battle. Peoria's lineup featured two Chicago Cubs on rehab assignments -- third baseman Aramis Ramirez (1-for-2, double) and outfielder Reed Johnson (1-2, HBP). The previous Elfstrom Stadium record was 14,492, set in August 2007, and it also featured the Chiefs as the Cougars' opponent.
Cougars starter Mathieu Leblanc Poirier (0-2) suffered the loss. He gave up two runs in the first and three -- two earned -- in the third before departing. He yielded six hits, walked one and fanned three.
The Cougars managed just five hits and also scored only one run for the second straight game. Steve Parker grounded out in the second against Jeffrey Beliveau (3-2) to bring home Jeremy Barfield for the club's only run.
Matt Fitts worked three scoreless innings of relief for the Cougars, and Josue Selenis and Scott Deal each got touched for an unearned run in the ninth as Peoria expanded its lead to 7-1.
After splitting the four-game set with Peoria, the Cougars (4-4, 45-33) hit the road Saturday night to start a four-game series in Clinton at 6 CDT against the LumberKings. Shawn Haviland (6-3, 3.64) will face Aaron Pribanic (6-4, 2.49).
