Akron RubberDucks News Release
The Aeros made a few more roster moves today as RHP Anthony Reyes was received from the AZL Indians on MLB rehab assignment and LHP Eric Berger was transferred to Class AAA Columbus.
Reyes will continue his rehab assignment with the Aeros tonight after going 0-1 with a 4.51 ERA in his two outings for the Rookie League team in the Arizona League. The 28-year-old underwent Tommy John reconstructive right elbow surgery in June 2009 and was 1-1 with a 6.57 ERA in eight starts for the Cleveland Indians that season. He was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals organization in a trade back in July 2008 for former Aero Luis Perdomo and cash. He was named the best pitching prospect in the Cardinals system prior to the 2005 and 2006 seasons and was the winning pitcher in Game 1 of the 2006 World Series. Reyes is expected to start for Akron this evening at 7:05 p.m. and will be on a three-inning or 50-pitch limit, whichever comes first.
Berger earns his first-ever promotion to the Clippers today and is currently expected to start tonight at Huntington Park. The 22-year-old product of the University of Arizona was 4-5 with a 5.07 ERA in 15 games (14 starts) for the Aeros thus far this season. He began the year in extended spring training and joined Akron for his second stint in the Eastern League on April 26th. He owns a career 7-6 record with a 4.30 ERA in 104.2 innings in Double-A and led the Class A Kinston Indians last season with a 2.45 ERA, even though he spent the final six weeks of the regular season with the Aeros. The Indians selected Berger in the eighth round of the June 2008 Draft and he began his profession career that season with short-season Class A Mahoning Valley and Class A Lake County.
Since MLB rehab assignments do not count against minor league roster limits, the Aeros roster is currently at 23 men + 1 on rehab assignment.
Reyes is expected to wear #33 tonight as the Aeros continue their crucial three-game series against the Bowie Baysox at 7:05 p.m. at Canal Park. It is Christmas in July and Akron Racers night at Canal Park and fans can take advantage of Two for Tuesday discounts throughout the stadium.
