Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - The Reading Phillies completed their series-opening win, 9-4, but the Richmond Flying Squirrels got even in the nightcap, downing the R-Phils, 6-2, in front of 5,133 on Tuesday night at The Diamond.

In game two of the series, the Squirrels got out quickly against Reading right-hander Michael Cisco. Ryan Lormand got the rally started in the first with a one-out single. Cisco then walked Thomas Neal and Brandon Belt roped a two-run triple down the right-field line for a 2-0 lead. Conor Gillaspie brought in Belt with a sacrifice fly to right field as Richmond plated three runs in the inning to lead, 3-0.

The R-Phils got one run back in the third when Kevin Nelson led off with a double off of Squirrels' lefty Clayton Tanner. Tanner balked Nelson to third and he scored a batter later when Michael Spidale singled through the middle of the infield.

Richmond tacked the run right back on in the bottom of the frame. Nick Noonan led off against Cisco and singled into right field. Lormand singled him to third and Neal made it 4-1 with a single back up the middle.

Cisco (2-7) left in the midst of the sixth inning. He was charged with four earned runs on 11 hits over 5 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out four as he lost for the second time at The Diamond.

The R-Phils attempted to rally with back-to-back singles from Cody Overbeck and Freddy Galvis to start the seventh against Tanner. However, Tanner was able to limit the damage to a lone run on a sacrifice fly from Rich Thompson. The lefty departed following the sacrifice fly as Mitch Lively finished the frame in relief.

Tanner worked 6 2/3 innings for the win, claiming a victory for the third consecutive start. He allowed a pair of earned runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out four.

The Squirrels insured the victory with a pair of runs off of reliever Jason Anderson in the bottom of the seventh. Clay Timpner brought in one run with an RBI ground ball, while Sharlon Schoop brought home the final run with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Lively pinned down the victory as he strolled through the final 2 1/3 innings. He earned his third save of the season, not allowing a hit and striking out four.

Prior to game two, the two clubs completed their suspended series-opener from Monday night. The Reading Phillies led 9-2 upon the restart in the top of the seventh inning and cruised to the win, 9-4, despite two runs in the ninth for the Squirrels. Aaron Lowenstein drove those runs in with a two-run double off of R-Phils' closer Sergio Escalona. Escalona did earn his ninth save of the season, working the final three innings to secure the victory.

Right-hander J.C. Ramirez (3-2) claimed the win, working the first six innings on Monday night. David Mixon (10-6) was tagged with the loss, having conceded eight runs -- seven earned -- a night prior.

The finale of the three-game series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Wednesday night at The Diamond. RHP Craig Westcott (2-1, 2.63) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Drew Naylor (9-7, 3.86) for Reading.
