Portland, Maine - Denyi Reyes allowed two runs over seven innings and the Sea Dogs (34-35) edged out a win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (30-39) 5-4 in the series opener on Friday night at Hadlock Field.
Reyes (W, 8-12) set a new season-high with nine strikeouts and allowed just three hits while walking none.
Josh Palacios started the scoring when he took Reyes deep with two outs in the top of the first to give New Hampshire a 1-0 lead.
But the Sea Dogs answered immediately on back-to-back doubles by Marcus Wilson and Joey Curletta with two outs in the bottom of the first to tie the game 1-1.
Portland took the lead in the second on a leadoff solo homer by Brett Netzer off of Zach Logue.
The Sea Dogs added another two-out run in the fourth on a single by Jarren Duran that scored Dylan Hardy and extended the lead to 3-1.
Logue (L, 3-7) allowed two runs on four hits in three innings with one walk and three strikeouts.
Chad Spanberger hit a solo homer off of Reyes with two outs in the seventh to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Eduard Bazardo pitched a perfect eighth and struck out two Fisher Cats' hitters.
The Sea Dogs scored a couple of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on Austin Rei's first home run of the season to extend the lead to 5-2. They would be needed, as Riley Adams hit a two-run homer off of Dedgar Jimenez (S, 10) in the top of the ninth. Jimenez struck out Spanberger to end the ballgame.
Portland finished the game with 12 hits, including four doubles and two home runs.
