Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Jose Reyes and Stephen Cardullo hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning tonight to supply the Albuquerque Isotopes (24-31) with just enough runs to defeat the Fresno Grizzlies 3-2 at Isotopes Park. The Isotopes' victory gave them a 2-2 series split with the Grizzlies.
Fresno's only runs of the night came in the opening frame from Danny Worth's RBI groundout and Matt Duffy's RBI single. The Grizzlies had a chance to do more damage in the inning with the bases loaded and two outs, but Jeff Hoffman was able to get of jam with a force out to second base.
Albuquerque responded in the bottom of the first with Brandon Barnes hitting a lead-off double and later coming around to score on Cardullo's opposite field single.
The Isotopes evened the score at 2-2 in the third inning when Reyes launched a lead-off home run into the McDonald's Picnic Pavilion. Cardullo immediately followed with solo home run of his own with shot over the left-center field fence to give Albuquerque a 3-2 lead.
The back-to-back home runs are the third time the Isotopes have accomplished the feat this season. Cardullo's home run was his seventh of the year, which is the most on the team.
Hoffman went seven innings tonight, while yielding eight hits, three walks, and struck out five to earn his third win of the season. Jason Gurka struck out the side in the ninth to record his third save.
The Isotopes now head to Sacramento to start a four-game set against the River Cats tomorrow night. Shane Carle (3-4, 5.67) will start on the mound for Albuquerque, while Sacramento will send right-hander Clayton Blackburn (2-3, 4.14). The series opener from Raley Field will get underway tomorrow at 8:05 p.m.
