Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Oklahoma City - The Iowa Cubs and Oklahoma City Dodgers combined for seven runs in a wild sixth inning before the I-Cubs pulled away late for a 7-5 win Friday against the Dodgers at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
Iowa scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning before the Dodgers responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-3 lead.
The I-Cubs then took the lead for good with three runs in the top of the eighth inning in front of a sellout crowd of 10,385.
With the win, Iowa (26-26) swept the rain-shortened series in Oklahoma City, 3-0, and won a seventh straight game.
Dodgers starting pitcher Jharel Cotton held Iowa without a hit until the fifth inning as he retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced Friday. Iowa's lone baserunner through the first four innings reached on an error. Daniel Vogelbach then led off the fifth inning with a double for the I-Cubs' first hit of the night.
Iowa later took a 3-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning.
Munenori Kawasaki led off the sixth inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by pitcher Rob Zastryzny. Arismendy Alcantara then drew a walk to put runners at first and second base with one out for Willson Contreras, who belted a three-run homer to left field for his ninth homer of the season.
The Dodgers answered in the bottom of the frame with four runs.
Austin Barnes singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning and scored on a RBI double by Rob Segedin to cut Iowa's lead to 3-1. Zach Walters hit into a fielder's choice, which scored Segedin to cut Iowa's lead to one run. Back-to-back singles by Brandon Hicks and Micah Johnson brought Walters home to tie the game, 3-3.
Pinch hitter O'Koyea Dickson and Charlie Culberson then drew consecutive walks to load the bases with two outs for Corey Brown. A balk was called on Iowa pitcher Giovanni Soto and Micah Johnson scored to give the Dodgers a 4-3 advantage.
Iowa Cubs manager Marty Pevey was ejected by home plate umpire Ron Teague before Brown struck out the end of the inning. Iowa pitcher Soto was then ejected by Teague.
The I-Cubs went on to take a 6-4 lead in the eighth inning.
Juan Perez hit a two-run double to give Iowa a 5-4 advantage. The I-Cubs then added a third run in the top of the eighth inning on a wild pitch by Dodgers pitcher Luis Avilan to go ahead by two runs.
The Dodgers (26-26) responded in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Zach Walters tripled to lead off for Oklahoma City, then scored when Brandon Hicks hit a grounder to Iowa shortstop Kawasaki, who was charged with an error. The run cut Iowa's lead to 6-5.
But Iowa got the run back in the top of the ninth inning on a RBI double by Alcantara to take a 7-5 lead.
The Dodgers put two runners on base with none out in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Iowa pitcher Jean Machi struck out Barnes and got Segedin to ground into a double play to end the game.
Rehabbing Chicago Cubs pitcher Dallas Beeler (1-0) was credited with the win, allowing one run and one hit over two innings. Machi earned his first save of the season.
Oklahoma City reliever Lisalverto Bonilla (1-1) was charged with the loss and blown save, allowing three runs and two hits over one-third of an inning as the Dodgers lost a fourth straight game.
The Dodgers next return to the road and open a four-game series in Round Rock at 6:05 p.m. Saturday against the Express at Dell Diamond.
