Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Despite both offenses being fast out of the gate Friday night in Albuquerque, pitching took over in a great hitter's ballpark, with no runs scored after the third inning in a 3-2 Isotopes win over the Fresno Grizzlies.
Andrew Aplin (3-for-5) led off the game with a triple bouncing off the warning track in right field, and scored a batter later on Danny Worth's RBI groundout. It was 2-0 Fresno a Matt Duffy (2-for-4) RBI single, scoring Preston Tucker (2-for-4) who doubled to the wall in center. Albuquerque's Brandon Barnes then led off the home half with a double, and scored on a Stephen Cardullo RBI single, cutting the Grizzlies' lead to 2-1 after an inning.
Aplin, who collected his first three-hit game of the season on Thursday, made it two straight with three hits in consecutive starts.
The Isotopes took the lead in the third when Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes led off with a home run, and was followed by a homer from Cardullo, his seventh. The back-to-back solo shots to left field made it 3-2 Albuquerque. For Reyes, Friday was the second game of his MiLB assignment as he makes his way back to the Majors following suspension.
Grizzlies left-hander Tommy Shirley (loss, 3-4) put together a quality start, lasting six innings allowing three earned runs. The southpaw allowed eight hits and two walks, while striking out seven. Shirley's counterpart, Rockies pitching prospect Jeff Hoffman (win, 3-3), matched by scattering eight hits in seven innings, striking out five and walking three. Both runs Hoffman allowed were earned.
Jason Gurka, who saved the first game of the series, also saved the finale by striking out the side in the ninth around a walk of Max Stassi. It was Gurka's third save of the season.
The Grizzlies now head home to open an eight-game homestand against El Paso (Padres) and Salt Lake City (Angels). On Saturday night at Chukchansi Park RHP Carlos Pimentel (4-3, 6.88) will start for El Paso, against RHP Brad Peacock (0-1, 5.64) for Fresno. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
