Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The New York Mets have announced Jose Reyes and Juan Lagares will join the Binghamton Mets Tuesday night in Altoona for their 7:05 PM game against the Curve. Following his release from the Colorado Rockies, Reyes signed a Minor League contract with the Mets on Saturday. Lagares has been assigned to the B-Mets on rehab from a left thumb injury.
Reyes, 33, joins the B-Mets after playing two games with the Brooklyn Cyclones (SS-A). The four-time All-Star and 2011 National League batting champion opened the season on the Restricted List after violating Major League Baseball's Domestic Violence Policy. The Rockies released the infielder on June 23.
He has played 13 seasons in the Majors, including nine with the Mets (2003-2011). Reyes first appeared with the B-Mets in 2002, when he hit .287 and stole 27 bases over 65 games. The Santiago, DR native also wore a B-Mets jersey on rehab assignments in 2004 and 2011.
Lagares, 27, suffered a sprained left thumb on a diving catch against the Miami Marlins on June 4. The outfielder played in four games following the injury before landing on the Disabled List on June 16. He was hitting .289 in 48 games before being sidelined.
He has played in 428 games across four seasons with the Mets since making his Major League debut in 2013. Lagares won a National League Gold Glove for his defensive work in 2014. Lagares hit .304 in 218 games across two seasons with the B-Mets in 2011 and 2012. He also played two games with Binghamton on a rehab assignment following an intercostals strain in 2014.
No official timetable related to either player's stint with the B-Mets has been announced.
Fans can purchase tickets for the B-Mets upcoming homestand by stopping by the NYSEG Stadium box office, calling 723-METS or by visiting BMETS.COM.
