Reign Are Stopped in Shootout, Fall 4-3 in Idaho
November 3, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Ontario Reign News Release
BOISE, ID - The Ontario Reign (3-0-1-2), back-to-back Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, earned a point in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Idaho Steelheads (3-2-0-1) at CenturyLink Arena on Saturday night.
For the fourth straight game, the Reign have gone into extra time to decide the winner; Saturday night saw the Steelheads get the extra point but Ontario extends their point streak to six-games.
Brett Beebe netted his first professional goal at the 5:53 mark of the first period. The rookie received a pass from Everett Sheen and went shortside to fire a shot over the glove of Pat Nagle giving Ontario an early lead. That lead was short lived as the Steelheads' power play unit struck at 7:25 with a power-play goal scored by Tommy Grant from a sharp angle at the bottom of the right faceoff circle. Danny Dries scored his second goal in as many games as he controlled Derek Couture's point shot and sent it in from between his legs.
Taylor Vause evened the score in the second period with a laser past Mathias Niederberger from the left circle; Etienne Boutet earned the lone assist. The Reign made the most of a power play opportunity with pressure in the Steelheads zone. A wide shot rung around the net and gave a chance for close shot, Mike Towns was able to get his stick on the loose puck and stuffed it past Nagle to give Ontario the 3-2 lead.
Mitch Wahl tied the game 3-3 with a rebound that slid just past Niederberger's outstretched glove for the second Steelheads power-play goal of the night. Grant earned the assist on the play. There was all kinds of traffic before the goal lit up, and a scrum following the tally which took several minutes to sort out.
A carbon copy of Friday night's game, the 3-3 game went into a scoreless overtime frame forcing a shootout decider. Idaho's first three shooters all found the back of the net to Ontario's one shootout goal from Matt White. Yasin Cisse was the Reign's fourth shooter but the puck hit the post giving the Steelheads their first win over Ontario.
Niederberger took the shootout loss with 24 saves on 27 shots; Nagle took the win with 37 stops on 40 shots.
Three Stars: 1. IDH - Taylor Vause 2. IDH - Tommy Grant 3. ONT - J.T. Barnett
