K-Wings comeback cut short as Cyclones hang on in a shootout

Kalamazoo, MI- Yanni Gourde scored with 1:36 left in regulation to force overtime, but the Kalamazoo Wings (1-3-0-1) couldn't complete the comeback. The Cincinnati Cyclones (6-0-0-0) outscored the K-Wings 2-1 in the shootout to remain perfect on the season with a 5-4 victory Sunday afternoon.
A penalty plagued first period for the K-Wings kept them on their heels. Kalamazoo committed six penalties for twelve minutes limiting their attack on offense. The six infractions for Kalamazoo were not only the most they have had in a single period, but it also marked the most they have had occurred in a entire game.
Cincinnati spent a majority of the period on the power-play. The Cyclones capitalized on their first power-play chance of the game with a tally from Josh McFadden (1st).
The K-Wing's received only one power-play chance in the first period, but made the most of it, as Gourde and Eric Kattelus hooked up with Sam Ftorek for his first goal of the young season.
Despite giving up five power-play chances to the Cyclones, shots on the goal in the first period were nearly equal. Kalamazoo was outshot in the first period 12-11 by Cincinnati.
Jumping out ahead early in the second period, Kattelus intercepted a Cyclones pass in between the circles and registered his team-best third goal of the season.
However, the remainder of the period belonged to Cincinnati's Wade Megan, who scored two goals and added an assist to increase his point streak to six games.
Megan (5th) tied the game 8:50 into the middle stanza with a rebound marker. Less than two minutes later, Megan sent an outlet pass to Philippe Lefebvre (1st), who scored on an odd-man rush to regain a 3-2 lead for the Cyclones.
Pushing the Cyclones lead to two goals, Megan walked the puck from the left circle and flung a wrist shot past Joel Martin.
Attempting a comeback in the third period, Kattelus (4th) earned his second goal of the game on the power-play by deflecting a Gourde slap shot past Rob Madore.
The connection of Gourde and Kattelus continued later in the period. In a scramble in front of the Cyclones net, Chris Lawrence found Gourde (2nd) for his third point (1 goal, 2 assists) on the game. Earning a secondary assist on the tally was Kattelus, who finished the game with four points (2 goals, 2 assists).
In the shootout, the Cyclones received goals from Barry Almeida and the eventual game-winner from John McFadden, while Gourde scored the lone goal for the K-Wings.
Three of the Cyclones six victories this season have come in either overtime or shootout. Cincinnati is now just two wins shy of tying the best start of ECHL history (8-0-0-0) shared by the 1994-95 Dayton Bombers and the 2001-02 Trenton Titans.

The K-Wings will continue their five-game home stand this Wednesday, November 6th at 10:30 a.m. with second-leg of the stand versus the Wheeling Nailers during the annual Education Day presented by PNC Bank, RxOptical, Walgreen's, Consumers Credit Union and Bronson Orthopedic & Sports Medicine.
Tickets for all 36 K-Wings home games are currently on sale at the Wings Stadium Ticket Office, all Ticketmaster locations, including www.ticketmaster.com or by calling (800) 745-3000. Ticket office hours are Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturdays.
Regular season ticket prices for home games are $13 and $17.50 for adults and only $7 for kids ages 12 and under. The price for all K-Wings premium night games (all colored ice games and the New Year's Eve game) are just $1 more. Fans can save money by purchasing K-Wings single-game tickets in advance. Tickets purchased on the day of a game increase by $2 (adults only).
Fans that plan on attending multiple games can avoid service fees plus enjoy a discount from the single-game price by purchasing a 12, 24 or 36-game flexi-plan. These plans, along with full-season and group ticket packages may be ordered through the K-Wings Sales office by calling (269) 743-6011.
