May 21, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Today's Game: For the third time in 13 games the RedHawks will play a game that starts in the morning when they face the Fresno Grizzlies beginning at 11:05 a.m. local time (1:05 p.m. central time).
Last Game: The Grizzlies blasted four home runs and used the power surge to cruise to a 10-3 win over the RedHawks. Roger Kieschnick and Tony Abreu went back-to-back with the two outs in the third inning, and Jonny Monell and Gary Brown went deep later in the game. Fresno tallied 13 hits for the game, seven of which went for extra bases. The RedHawks scored runs in the fifth, sixth, and eighth innings, but could not keep pace with the Grizzlies attack. RedHawks pitcher Asher Wojciehowski (1-1) allowed eight runs and 10 hits over five innings. He had allowed eight runs all season prior to yesterday's game.
Today's Probable Pitcher: Brett Oberholtzer will look to cool down a hot Fresno offense...Oberholtzer got the start in the first game of the current road trip Thursday in Sacramento. He went 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out four and set a new season high with four walks. The lefty threw 95 pitches, including 59 over the first two innings, and did not figure in the decision...Through four starts in April he posted a 7.79 ERA, but he has reduced that number to 3.29 over three starts in May...He's had some difficulty working deep into games, lasting at least five innings just twice. That's out of the norm for Oberholtzer, who went at least six innings in 10 of his 15 starts for OKC in 2012...One of those starts was against Fresno last Aug. 15, when he allowed one run in seven innings and earned a win.
Against the Grizzlies: 2013: 0-1 2012: 3-1 All-time: 49-29 In Fresno: 21-16
The RedHawks took three of four from the Grizzlies in their lone series in 2012. The final game had a memorable ending, with RedHawks pitcher Brian Bass providing a game-winning single in the bottom of the 12 inning to lead to a 3-2 win. The RedHawks pitching staff was great, posting a 2.31 ERA and allowing one home run...During their last trip to Fresno in 2011, the RedHawks split the four-game set. They scored exactly five runs in each game...Excluding Tucson, which has only been in the league since 2011, Fresno is one of three teams the RedHawks have a winning record against at both home and on the road (Omaha, Round Rock).
Big 12 = Big Trip: The RedHawks are in the middle of their annual 12-day road trip while the Big 12 Baseball Championship takes place at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. With one leg complete, the RedHawks will next travel to Des Moines, where they will play five games in four days to make up for an earlier postponement against the Iowa Cubs. Through the first five games they are 2-3.
Running With the Pac: The RedHawks are in the midst of a stretch of 16-straight games against Pacific Conference foes, going 7-6 so far. Last season the RedHawks went 14-17 against the other side of the league, including a 6-10 mark on the road.
A Day of Firsts: The Grizzlies set new opponent single-game highs against the RedHawks for this season with four home runs, two triples, and seven extra-base hits. In fact, they had not allowed an extra-base hit in either of the two previous games. It was also the first time they allowed 10 runs in a game since April 25 and just the second time in 18 games this month they allowed more than six runs. Yesterday also was the quickest nine-inning game the RedHawks have played this year, clocking in at 2 hours, 24 minutes.
Linsanity: Che-Hsuan Lin is batting .400 (8x20) over his last six games. He's collected three-multi hit games, walked four times, and struck out just twice during this stretch.
Fernando En Fuego: Fernando Martinez has three-straight multi-hit games, going 7-for-12 with a home run and four RBI. Before this recent roll, Martinez had gone just 3-for-26 through his first seven games with OKC this season.
Making Contact: The RedHawks tied a season low at the plate with just two strikeouts last night. They have struck out exactly 300 times this season, which is the fourth-fewest in the PCL.
Dinger Details: Before yesterday, the RedHawks had not allowed more than two home runs in a game and had allowed the fewest home runs in the PCL. Now they are tied for third-least (32)...On offense, the RedHawks have hit just two home runs over their last eight games. They have 29 homers for the season, and only Tucson (28) and New Orleans (20) have gone deep fewer times.
At Your Own RISP: The RedHawks have held their opponents to a .175 average (18-for-103) with runners in scoring position over the last 11 games as well as a .179 mark (22-for-123) during the previous 14 contests.
Starting Line: Over the first five games of the road trip, RedHawks starting pitchers have combined to go just 22.2 innings, with no start lasting longer than 5.0 IP. Three starts have failed to complete five innings. Only one of the last 10 starts overall has lasted at least six full innings.
Walk This Way: The RedHawks did a good job of throwing strikes yesterday, allowing only two walks. They have issued 52 walks over the last nine games, with at least six walks in a game six times. Their 171 walks this season is the fifth-most in the league.
Rise and Shine: Today is the third of five games the RedHawks will play this season that begin in the morning. The RedHawks went 2-2 in a.m. games last year and are 2-0 so far in 2013, with both games resulting in walk-off victories.
