Memphis Redbirds News Release

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Blown scoring opportunities and a key throwing error allowed the Salt Lake Bes to come-from-behind and beat the Memphis Redbirds 5-4 in the series opener on Monday night at Spring Mobile Ballpark.

The Redbirds took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning and called on Marc Rzepczynski to preserve that advantage. He would load the bases on a leadoff hit and a pair of walks to set up the play of the night.

Kole Calhoun came to the plate and swung at the first pitch, hitting a dribbler toward the mound. Rzepczynski charged toward home and fumbled the ball before throwing wildly past catcher Rob Johnson. Two runs scored on the play giving the Bees a 5-4 lead. The left-hander was charged with two errors on the play to take the loss (0-1).

Rob Delaney (1-0) picked up the win with three scoreless innings of relief. He made a fine defensive play to end the game. With Jermaine Curtis aboard following a one-out error, Jamie Romak hit a line shot back up the middle that Delaney speared in self-defense. He threw to first, doubling off Curtis to end the game.

Memphis dropped their third straight after opening the road trip with a pair of wins.

Kolten Wong returned to the lineup after missing three games with an ankle injury and hit a tape measure, two-run homer in the first inning, his third of the year. His hit extended his season-best hitting streak to 10 games.

The Redbirds stranded eleven runners including leaving the bases loaded twice. The night continued a Redbirds trend of missing out on big scoring opportunities. They also have lost leads in all five games on the current trip.

Michael Wacha (4-0, 1.89) will face right-hander Kip Wells (1-3, 10.80) on Tuesday morning at 11:35 a.m. Spring Mobile Ballpark.
