Salt Lake Bees News Release

Salt Lake scored a pair of unearned runs in the eighth inning, as the Bees rallied for a 5-4 win over the Memphis Redbirds on Monday night. Down by a run, Luis Rodriguez led off the eighth with a single to right. After Rodriguez was sacrificed to second by Luke Carlin, Roberto Lopez was intentionally walked and Andrew Romine received a base on balls to load the bases. Kole Calhoun tapped one back towards the mound and Memphis pitcher Marc Rzepczynski fumbled it for one error and then made a wide throw to the plate that went to the backstop for a second error, which allowed the tying and go ahead runs to score. Memphis threatened in the ninth after an error by Luis Jimenez at third base, but Jamie Romak hit a liner that was snared by pitcher Rob Delaney, who tossed it to first for the game ending double play.

Delaney (1-0) earned the win by tossing three scoreless innings, as he allowed just two hits with no strikeouts and two walks. Rodriguez led the Bees with two hits and one run batted in, while Scott Cousins added a pair of singles. Brad Hawpe singled and walked twice to extend his on-base streak to nineteen games.

"Late in the game, we kept threatening, and obviously through a break of theirs we were able to push across those last two runs to get the win," stated Bees skipper Keith Johnson. "Memphis is at the top of their division for a reason. They play good baseball, and they are the best defensive team in the league. Unfortunately for them and fortunately for us, they made an error that helped us at the end of the ballgame."
