Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - Blake Beavan's strong start steered the Tacoma Rainiers to a 5-2 series-opening win over the Nashville Sounds at Cheney Stadium on Monday night.
Beavan silenced the Sounds to one run on four hits over a season-high 7.2 innings on the way to improving to 2-2 with the Rainiers this season. The right-hander struck out five Nashville batters without issuing a walk.
Home runs from Carlos Peguero and Alex Liddi led the Rainiers at the plate. Peguero stretched Tacoma's 1-0 lead to three runs after belting a two-run homer in the fourth inning - his sixth homer this season. Liddi collected his team-leading seventh homer of 2013 after delivering a solo shot in the eighth.
Tacoma combined to collect a total of seven hits in the contest, fronted by Liddi's 3-for-4 effort. Scott Savastano notched a pair of singles and Stefen Romero plated run with a single in the sixth.
Left-handed reliever Brian Moran surrendered one run on two hits over 1.1 innings and picked up the first save of his 2013 campaign.
The Rainiers (27-18) take on the Sounds again in the second game of the four-game series scheduled for 6:05 p.m. tomorrow, May 21. Left-hander Jimmy Gillheeney (2-1, 3.70) is slated to get the start for Tacoma against Nashville's right-hander Johnny Hellweg (2-4, 3.72).
