Memphis Redbirds News Release
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Salt Lake Bees (23-23) scored 10 unanswered runs to defeat the Memphis Redbirds (22-21) by a score of 10-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Spring Mobile Ballpark. Memphis held an early 3-0 lead, but Salt Lake capitalized on an eight-run 7th inning to take the lead for good.
Michael Wacha had a strong day on the hill, but earned a no-decision for his effort when the bullpen gave up the season-high eight-run inning. Wacha finished with two runs (both earned) on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched.
Jamie Romak went 2-for-4 (two doubles) with three RBIs, Adron Chambers had a 2-for-3 day, while Jermaine Curtis was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run.
The Redbirds got on the board first when Jamie Romak hit his second double of the day with the bases loaded in the 3rd inning to give Memphis a 3-0 advantage. Romak had earlier collided with the Bees' John Hester at home plate in the 2nd, the play knocked the Salt Lake catcher out of the game.
In the bottom of the 6th, Wacha gave up back-to-back singles before being relieved by Sam Freeman with no outs. Freeman allowed in both inherited runners and Memphis took a 3-2 lead into the 7th inning.
Freeman opened the 7th and in short order was in trouble. After Salt Lake loaded the bases on a double, a hit batter, and a single, Eric Fornataro replaced Freeman. Fornataro garnered a sacrifice fly from his first batter, which tied the game at 3-3. The Bees would then bat around, sending 12 men to the dish in the inning, and score seven more times before finishing with the score at 10-3.
Fornataro's line in his 1.0 IP: five runs (all earned) on two hits with three walks and a hit batter. Freeman took the loss (3-2) and ended up with three runs (all earned) on three hits and a hit batter in 1.0 IP.
Victor Marte pitched a 1-2-3 8th inning for the Redbirds. Bees' relievers David Carpenter (4-0) and Chad Cordero held Memphis scoreless for the final three frames.
The Redbirds and Bees face off for the third game of the series on Wednesday in Salt Lake at 7:35 p.m. CT. A.J. Schugel (1-2, 6.18) will toe the rubber for the home team.
