RedHawks Run Over Grizzlies, 15-2
May 21, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Fresno, Calif. - The Oklahoma City RedHawks had two monster innings at the plate, including a 10-run eighth inning, in a 15-2 rout over the Fresno Grizzlies before 6,490 Tuesday afternoon at Chukchansi Park.
The RedHawks (26-18) wasted no time asserting control with a five-run first inning. They went ahead 3-0 on three consecutive RBI doubles by Brett Wallace, Brandon Laird, and Fernando Martinez.
With the bases loaded and one out, Austin Wates sent a sharp two-run single into center field to make it 5-0.
Fresno starting pitcher Chris Heston settled in after the rocky start, keeping the RedHawks quiet over the next few innings.
The Grizzlies (26-20) offense didn't make much noise either, thanks to RedHawks pitcher Brett Oberholtzer. Oberholtzer starting off his outing by retiring 12 of the first 13 hitters he faced, allowing just a first-inning single over that stretch. He also retired 20 of the first 22 Grizzlies to step to the plate.
With the RedHawks still leading 5-0 in the seventh, Fresno put two runners on base with two outs. Oberholtzer (3-3) punctuated his start and ended the frame with his ninth strikeout, tying a season high.
The lefty went a season-high seven innings, allowing three hits and one walk in his finest start of the year.
The RedHawks went back to work in the eighth inning, putting up an incredible 10 runs, eight of which scored before an out was recorded.
Marc Krauss hit a two-run homer, and Brett Wallace connected on a grand slam. Jake Elmore and Andy Simunic each provided RBI singles as well.
The RedHawks had previously scored 10 runs in one inning on July 16, 2012 during a 16-6 win in Omaha.
With the RedHawks ahead 15-0, Fresno broke up the shutout with a pair of runs with two outs in the ninth. Had the Grizzlies not scored, it would've been the largest shutout win in RedHawks team history. Instead they settled for their largest win of the season, and their biggest margin of victory since a 15-1 blowout of Reno on Aug. 20, 2010.
The RedHawks finished with 13 hits, including six for extra bases. Laird led the way with three hits and Wallace had a team-high five RBI.
Heston (5-3) ended up getting through 5.2 innings, but the damage had been done. He allowed five runs and seven hits on the day with four strikeouts and three walks.
The RedHawks will get some time to rest after the big day at the plate and will resume action Wednesday night at 9:05 p.m. central time. Live coverage begins at 8:35 p.m. on AM 1340 "The Game," 1340thegame.com, or through the free IHeartRadio mobile app.
