Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Behind seven shutout innings from starter Martin Perez, the Round Rock Express (24-21) blanked the Reno Aces (17-29) for the second consecutive night, 6-0.
In his last start, Perez was burdened with just one rough inning as the southpaw allowed four runs in the second to Colorado Springs but held the Sky Sox scoreless the remaining four. Tonight, he seemed determined to eliminate any blemishes from his record with an efficient and effective outing at Dell Diamond.
Although Express pitching was in full force, the offense also did its job, providing the staff with six runs of support to help the E-Train to a 2-0 series advantage over the Aces.
For the second straight night third baseman Alex Buchholz got the Express on the board with a one-out solo shot in the third inning. Buchholz's blast began a rally that would give the E-Train a 3-0 lead at the end of three frames. Round Rock proceeded to load the bases with two outs for left fielder Aaron Cunningham who delivered a two-run single to pad the Express lead.
Buchholz was in the middle of the action again in the fifth when he doubled to begin the frame. After a ground out by catcher Jose Felix moved Buchholz over to third, center fielder Engel Beltre plated him with a sacrifice fly to right, making the score 4-0.
The E-Train added to its lead in the bottom half of the sixth when Cunningham doubled with one out to set the table for the Express offense. Second baseman Yangervis Solarte wasted no time giving Round Rock some insurance runs as he blasted his fourth home run of the season on the first pitch he saw from Reno starter Charles Brewer, pushing the lead to six.
Meanwhile Perez was dominant, scattering three hits over 7.0 innings of work as the southpaw put together his best outing of 2013. After 77 pitches without allowing a walk, the starter was lifted for right-hander Johan Yan who finished off the masterpiece with 2.0 scoreless innings of relief. Yan has not allowed a run over his last three outings (6.2 innings) as he has lowered his ERA to 2.81.
Perez (1-1) earned the win, his first of the season with Round Rock, while Brewer suffered the loss, dropping to 2-4. With the shut out, Round Rock has now held Reno scoreless over the first 18.0 innings of the series.
The Express continues its homestand with game three of a four-game set against the Reno Aces Wednesday night at Dell Diamond. Round Rock will send right-hander Lisalverto Bonilla (3-2, 7.36 ERA) to the hill to face Arizona's top prospect Tyler Skaggs (3-5, 5.93). The theme for tomorrow night's game will be Winning Wednesday featuring game show style contests and much more, presented by the Texas Lottery.
