RedHawks' Nivar Selected to MLB All-Star Futures Game
July 10, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Oklahoma RedHawks infielder/outfielder Ramon Nivar was one 50 players selected to participate in the fifth annual RadioShack All-Star Futures Game. The contests will feature the top U.S. and international Minor League prospects competing against each other as part of Major League Baseball's All-Star Sunday, July 13 at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago. The game will begin at 4:30 p.m. (CDT) and will be televised live on ESPN2.
Nivar, 23, joined the RedHawks on July 2 after spending the first half of the season at Double-A Frisco. With the RoughRiders, Nivar led the Texas League in batting with a .347 average in 79 games. Nivar's impact was immediate with the RedHawks as he collected six hits in his first eight at bats and led the team to a pair of wins over Memphis. Since then, Nivar's average has cooled slightly to .355 (11-for-31) with a triple, homer and four RBI's in eight games.
Major League Baseball, in conjunction with the 30 Major League clubs and Baseball America, selected the 25-man rosters for each team (U.S. Team and World Team). Each Major League organization is represented and the World Team features players from seven different foreign countries and Puerto Rico. Players from all full-season Minor Leagues were eligible to participate.
There are currently a total of 76 players from the first four RadioShack All-Star Futures Games in the Major Leagues (see charts on page three). Five players selected to compete in this year's RadioShack All-Star Futures Game played in last year's game at Miller Park in Milwaukee, while one player participated in the 2001 game at SAFECO Field in Seattle and one player participated in the 2000 game at Turner Field in Atlanta.
In addition, six players have competed in both the RadioShack All-Star Futures Game and the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Those players are Lance Berkman (Houston Astros), Mark Buehrle (Chicago White Sox), Adam Dunn (Cincinnati Reds), Ben Sheets (Milwaukee Brewers), Alfonso Soriano (New York Yankees) and Barry Zito (Oakland Athletics).
The RadioShack All-Star Futures Game will end after seven innings (regardless of the score). Players and coaches will be outfitted in special RadioShack All-Star Futures Game jerseys and will wear the caps of their Major League organization with a RadioShack All-Star Futures Game logo embroidered on the side. Six Minor League umpires will work the game.
Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk will manage the U.S. Team, while eight-time All-Star Tony Oliva will manage the World Team.
