Sidewinders Top Nashville in 12

Tucson scored three runs in the top of the 12th inning and defeated Nashville 5-2 Thursday night at Greer Stadium.

Tim Olson's sacrifice fly plated Chad Tracy with the go-ahead run. Mike Bell later delivered a two-run single for the three run lead.

Brian Bruney pitched a perfect 12th to earn his fifth save.

The game marked the fifth extra innings contest for Tucson in the last nine. Nashville had also won 13 of its last 14 games at home. The Sidewinders overcame a travel day from Sacramento that featured a 3:15 a.m. wake up call and defeated the first place Sounds who were on the seventh day of a home stand.

Billy Martin started the scoring with a towering second inning home run which hit off the top of the guitar scoreboard in left center. Nashville starter Matt Guerrier settled down and retired the next 12 Tucson batters.

Paul Abbott retired the first nine Sounds he faced before giving up a single in the fourth. Dave Doster homered in that inning to tie the game at 1. Before the frame was over the Sounds added another run when J.J. Davis reached when Danny Ramirez dropped his fly ball. Davis later swiped third base and continued around to score when Jeff Waldron's throw went into left field.

Tucson trailed 2-1 going to the ninth. Mark Corey was in pursuit of his 27th save when Chad Tracy ripped a solo home run to tie the game with one out.

Sidewinders improved to 47-45. Tucson and Nashville will play game two of the four-game set Friday night. The game will start at 5:00 p.m. Tucson time but the game will air at 6:00 p.m. on AM 990 KTKT in its entirety. Mike Gosling (8-7 5.44) will start for the Sidewinders against Brian Meadows (5-0 2.08).
