Stein Tosses Complete Game, Ties 76-Year-Old PCL Record

July 10, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Edmonton Trappers News Release

Right-hander Blake Stein (1-0) tossed a complete game, allowed only one run on six hits and a walk, while striking out four as the Edmonton Trappers downed the Fresno Grizzlies 8-1 Thursday night at TELUS Field. Stein also tied a 76-year old PCL record with four sacrifice hits in the game. The record was originally set on August 20, 1927 by Ray Rohwer in a game played between Sacramento and Hollywood. It was the first start of the season for Stein in an Edmonton uniform and it was an unexpected start at that. The originally scheduled starter, right-hander Britt Reames, was recalled by the Montreal Expos earlier in the day. Stein only recently rejoined the Trappers after making four appearances with Double-A Harrisburg. The gem was Edmonton's sixth complete game of the season. The Trappers have now won 10 of the 12 games played between the two clubs this season and remain in first place in the PCL's North Division. Edmonton and Fresno continue this five-game set on Friday night at TELUS Field with a doubleheader.

The Grizzlies opened the scoring with a single run in the first inning off Stein. With one out Todd Linden singled to center field and advanced to second on a base hit up the middle by Tony Torcato. With two down Francisco Santos blooped a single into left-center field that plated Linden with the first run of the contest. Edmonton tied the game with an unearned run off Elliot Brown (1-2) in the third inning. Catcher Scott Sandusky led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Stein. With two down and Sandusky at third Anthony Medrano reached on an error by Fresno shortstop Cody Ransom that allowed Sandusky to score the Trappers first run. Edmonton took the lead in the fourth with another unearned run. Valentino Pascucci led off with a single up the middle. Matt Cepicky hit a ground ball that second baseman Jay Pecci threw away, allowing Pascucci to advance to second. Scott Hodges reached on an infield single to load the bases and Sandusky followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Pascucci with the go-ahead run.

Cepicky led off the sixth inning with a home run to right-center field. Hodges followed with a double down the right field line and Sandusky added a two-bagger down the left field line to put the Trappers up by three runs. Stein moved the catcher over to third base with his third sacrifice bunt of the game. Luis Figueroa singled to left-center to score Sandusky with the final run of the frame. Edmonton completed the scoring in the eighth inning with three runs off former Trapper Steve Connelly. With two down and runners at first and second Terrmel Sledge singled to right, scoring Figueroa. Luis Ortiz plated Anthony Medrano with the second run of the frame and Pascucci closed out the scoring in the inning and the game with an RBI single to right field. Stein was masterful after the first inning. He retired the side in order in the second, allowed a two-out double to Tony Torcato in the third and then retired the next 10 batters in a row. In all he retired 16 of 17 batters faced through the sixth inning. Santos and Cody Ransom had back-to-back singles to open the seventh inning, but that was as much of a rally as the Grizzlies could mount after the first inning.
