Sounds Host Willie McGee Bobblehead Night On Friday
July 10, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE â The Nashville Sounds will host their third of five bobblehead giveaways scheduled for the 2003 season when Willie McGee dolls are distributed to the first 2,000 fans entering Greer Stadium this Friday, July 11th, during the team's 7 p.m. game against Tucson (AAA-Diamondbacks). Gates open at 5 p.m. for the 7 p.m. contest.
McGee spent the 1980 and 1981 seasons with the Sounds, then the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees. In two seasons as a Sound, McGee hit .308 (188-for-611). His better season came in 1981 when he hit .322, third-best in the Southern League. He hit seven home runs, drove in 63, and swiped 24 bags that year and was named to the circuit's post-season All-Star team.
The four-time major-league All-Star selection (1983, '85, '87, '88) was traded from the Yankees to St. Louis in the winter of 1981 for reliever Bob Sykes. It turned into a lop-sided deal as McGee would flourish while Sykes never pitched in the majors again.
McGee joined the big leagues with the Cardinals in 1982 where he led all rookies with a .296 batting average. He finished third in the Rookie-of-the-Year balloting, behind Los Angeles' Steve Sax and Pittsburgh's Johnny Ray, and was named to the Topps All-Rookie Team.
In his 18-year career, McGee collected 2,254 base hits, mostly with the Cardinals, but also played in Oakland, San Francisco, and Boston. He was named the MVP of the National League in 1985, leading the Cardinals to the World Series with league-highs in average (.353), hits (216), and triples (18). Fellow Sounds alumnus Don Mattingly of the Yankees collected the junior circuit's MVP award that season, giving the Sounds a sweep of the top major-league honors.
McGee, who was a part of one world championship club (1982 Cardinals) and was on three other league pennant-winners ('85 &'87 Cardinals, '90 A's), led the National League in hitting in 1990 with a .335 average as he became the first player to win the batting title in one league (NL-Cardinals) after being traded to the other (AL-A's).
