Nashville Sounds News Release

NASHVILLE — The Nashville Sounds' bullpen was unable to hold a late 2-1 lead after a solid outing by starter Matt Guerrier and the visiting Tucson Sidewinders plated three runs in the top of the twelfth inning to record a 5-2 victory in the opener of a four-game series on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium.

The visitors took an early 1-0 lead on Billy Martin's second-inning solo homer against Guerrier, the lone blemish on another strong performance by the right-hander. Nashville responded in the fourth with a pair of runs to snag a 2-1 advantage. Second baseman Dave Doster blasted a one-out solo home run – his third longball of the year – off Tucson starter Paul Abbott to knot the contest. J.J. Davis followed with a fly ball to right-center that fell between centerfielder Danny Ramirez and rightfielder Brian Gordon; Ramirez was charged with a two-base error on the play. Davis swiped third – his 16th theft in 17 attempts this season – and scored when catcher Jeff Waldron's throw sailed into left field.

Guerrier was on cruise control for Nashville, fanning nine batters and allowing only one run on four hits over seven innings, but was left with a no-decision when closer Mark Corey faltered in the ninth. The PCL's top fireman surrendered a game-tying, one-out longball to Sidewinders third baseman Chad Tracy on a 3-2 pitch.

Neither team scored in the first two frames of free baseball before Tucson erupted for three runs against Sounds reliever Pat Mahomes in the top of the twelfth. Tracy drew a walk to open the frame and moved to third on a Martin double to right-center. Doug DeVore was intentionally walked to load the bases for Tim Olson, who broke the 2-all tie with a sacrifice fly to center. Mike Bell completed the scoring with a two-out, two-run single through the left side of the infield to push the score to its final 5-2.

Tucson closer Brian Bruney retired the Sounds in order in the bottom of the frame to record his fifth Triple-A save of the season.

Nashville centerfielder Tike Redman swiped his PCL-leading 37th base in the contest and went 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to seven games.

Sidewinders reliever Lee Marshall (4-5) recorded the victory following a pair of scoreless innings, while Mahomes (6-3) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs in his two innings of work.

The teams meet again on Friday evening at 7 p.m. in the second game of the four-game set. Nashville right-hander Brian Meadows (5-0, 2.06) puts his perfect record on the line as he faces Tucson southpaw Mike Gosling (8-7, 5.44). The first 2,000 fans through the Greer Stadium turnstiles will receive a complimentary Willie McGee bobblehead doll, courtesy of Piggly Wiggly.
