Today's Game: The RedHawks look to bounce back after getting shutout for the second time in 2013 when they face Nashville at 7:05 p.m. Pitcher Ross Seaton makes his first start for the RedHawks this season.
Last Game: Three Nashville pitchers combined to toss a four-hit shutout as the Sounds blanked the RedHawks, 1-0. Sounds starting pitcher Frankie De La Cruz retired 17 of 19 batters over six scoreless innings. Relievers Michael Olmsted and Rob Wooten kept the RedHawks scoreless over the final three innings. Nashville took advantage of an error by Jimmy Paredes to score the game's only run in the second inning on nicely executed hit-and-run with an RBI double by Blake Davis. The RedHawks put runners at the corners with one out in the ninth. After Wooten struck out Trevor Crowe, Brandon Laird sent a deep drive to right-center field, but Cole Garner made a running catch on the warning track to end the game.
Today's Probable Pitchers: Following his season debut with Double-A Corpus Christi, Ross Seaton makes his first start for the RedHawks...Seaton earned the win last Thursday against Springfield, holding the Cardinals to two runs and four hits over five innings...Last season Seaton combined to go 8-9 with a 3.93 ERA over 29 starts between the Hooks and RedHawks...He led Astros minor leaguers with a career-best 169.1 innings pitched and also set career highs in starts (29) and strikeouts (117)...Seaton made four starts for the RedHawks in 2012, going 0-1 with a 3.09 ERA...In three August starts, Seaton allowed one earned run each time out and posted a 1.45 ERA, but he received just six runs of support resulting in an 0-1 record.
Jordan Lyles will follow Seaton...Lyles got the start in the season opener, taking a loss against the Memphis Redbirds in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader...He pitched better than his final line indicated. Of the four runs he allowed over 4.1 innings, three scored after he left the game with the bases loaded...Of the 13 outs he recorded, 10 were groundouts...After making 25 starts for the Astros last season, Lyles is trying to bounce back following a rough Spring Training in which he allowed 24 runs and 36 hits over 11.2 innings...Lyles is 1-1 with a 4.02 ERA in three career meetings against the Sounds...Each of his two previous outings at Greer Stadium were during doubleheaders (1-1, 4.66 ERA).
Against the Sounds: 2013: 0-1 2012: 13-3 All-time: 127-114 In Nashville: 59-62
The RedHawks dominated last year's season series, taking 13 of 16 games, including a 10-game win streak at one point...Nashville actually had a better team batting average (.257 to .252), but the RedHawks outscored the Sounds 75-45...The RedHawks pitching staff was outstanding, posting a 2.67 ERA...Nashville won consecutive games just once, June 20-21 at Greer Stadium...The RedHawks have won the season series in four of the last five years...The Sounds won last night's series opener after failing to secure a series opening victory in four tries last season.
The Lonliest Number: Yesterday marked the RedHawks' first 1-0 loss since Aug. 31, 2011 at New Orleans. The RedHawks accrued a pair of 1-0 wins since then.
Not Quiet For Long: The RedHawks averaged 7.25 runs per game in contests immediately following shutouts in 2012, scoring at least six runs in seven of eight games. After getting shutout 9-0 by Memphis in the season opener, the RedHawks scored eight runs in their next game.
What Else Did You Expect?: It's only appropriate the RedHawks and Sounds played a one-run game to begin their season series. They both tied for the PCL lead in one-run wins in 2012 (28) and played five one-run games against each other last season. Each of Nashville's last four wins over the RedHawks has been by a single tally.
Keeping it in the Park: Until Brock Peterson's solo home run in the bottom of the 11th Sunday, the RedHawks pitching staff had not given up a home run in 113 consecutive innings. The last player to go yard against the RedHawks was Diory Hernandez of the Iowa Cubs in the 8th inning on August 26, 2012. Going back to last season, the RedHawks have allowed just seven dingers over the last 28 contests, spanning 247 IP.
Jake Takes the Cake: Yesterday Jake Elmore had two of the team's four hits, including the only one for extra bases. Elmore has recorded seven hits the last two games, including his first career five-hit game on Sunday against Memphis. The last RedHawk with a five-hit game was Carlos Corporan on July 6, 2012 at New Orleans.
Long Time Coming: On Sunday, reliever Jose Valdez recorded his first win in nearly two years. The club's career saves leader had not earned a victory since April 12, 2011 during an 8-7 win in Nashville. Valdez made 98 appearances with the RedHawks, Astros, and GCL Astros in between wins.
Running Into Trouble: Through the first five games, the RedHawks have had five baserunners picked off and four others caught stealing.
Recent Transactions: Pitcher John Ely was placed on the disabled list, retroactive to April 7. The RedHawks current roster stands at just 24 active players.
