High Winds Ends Sky Sox Game After Fifth, Tucson Wins 14-3

April 9, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

Due to extremely high winds tonight's game was called after five innings with the Tucson Padres (2-3) taking home the victory over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, 14-3 (2-3). The blustery wind conditions began to pick up at the beginning of the third inning and continued to grow stronger as the game progressed.

Before the conditions worsened, Sky Sox pitcher Aaron Cook blanked the Padres for two innings. In the top of the third the Padres scored six runs, highlighted by a Travis Buck two-run double with two outs. In the bottom of the inning the Sky Sox got on the board when Corey Dickerson hit a soaring fly ball to center field. The outfielder's home run was his second hit of the game as he extended his hitting streak to a team-high five games.

An at-bat later DJ LeMahieu hit a triple off the centerfield wall and was driven in by Charlie Blackmon on a RBI single. Rob Scahill took the mound in the fourth and gave up a home run and three straight doubles in strong winds that were blowing straight out to centerfield. The Sky Sox tagged on one more run in the bottom of the inning when pinch-hitter Tim Wheeler doubled home Lars Davis.

Before the game was called in the fifth, the Padres scored four more runs to make the final 14-3. 13 of the Padres' 14 runs tonight were scored with two outs.

The two teams are scheduled to play the second game of their four-game series tomorrow at 6:35 MT. Left-hander Christian Friedrich (0-1, 4.91) takes the mound against righty Tim Stauffer (0-0, 12.00).
