
River Cats Bested by Rainiers, 9-4

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Michael Taylor and Jemile Weeks extended their hitting streaks to five games apiece, but the River Cats dropped game one of their series against the Tacoma Rainiers by a score of 9-4 on Throwback Monday at Raley Field.
After a 40-minute first inning, the Rainiers used four singles and two walks to take a 3-1 lead. 32 minutes later, when the second inning ended, the score doubled, putting Tacoma ahead, 6-2.
The River Cats scored again in the bottom of the fourth when Shane Peterson singled-home shortstop Andy Parrino. Their final run crossed the plate in the bottom of the ninth when Taylor scored on an error by Tacoma second baseman Nate Tenbrink. The Rainiers would score three more times, ultimately winning, 9-4.
Sacramento starting pitcher Bruce Billings gave up six earned runs on seven hits and four walks in 2.0 innings for the loss. Weeks and Taylor remain the only River Cats to have a hit in all of the team's games in 2013. Weeks finished 1-for-3 with two runs, two walks and a stolen base, while Taylor went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run. Shane Peterson went 1-for-2 with two walks. The River Cats pitching staff combined to give up 16 hits and strike out 13.
Rainiers starter D.J. Mitchell walked seven in four innings, while reliever Brian Sweeney was credited with his first win of the season for his 2.1 scoreless innings of work. Eric Thames led the team offensively, finishing 4-for-5 with two runs. Catching prospect Mike Zunino went 3-for-4 with a run, a home run and four RBIs.
Game two of the series is set for 7:05 p.m. at Raley Field on Toyota Family Value Tuesday with River Cats LHP Justin Thomas (0-1, 16.62 ERA) taking on Mariners top prospect, LHP Danny Hultzen (1-0, 1.50 ERA).
