Former Cubs Lead Round Rock over Iowa

April 9, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release

Round Rock, TX - Former I-Cub Jim Adduci hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning for Round Rock and the Express (5-1) never trailed in a 4-2 victory over the Iowa Cubs (0-6) at Dell Diamond tonight. The Cubs have lost six straight games to start the season for the first time in franchise history.

Adduci's homer was part of a three-run first for the Express against Cubs' starer Chris Rusin. Rusin walked three and hit another batter as the Express sent nine men to the plate. Joey Butler's sacrifice fly drove in the final run and Rusin stranded the bases loaded. He has allowed three runs in the first inning in each of his first two starts. Rusin (0-1) finished six innings and allowed just one more run in the bottom of the fifth. Aaron Cunningham drew a leadoff walk and scored on a two-out double by Mike Olt. The Cubs have walked 11 batters in the first two games of this series and eight of them have scored.

Express starter Josh Lindblom allowed just one run in four innings of work. Darnell McDonald connected on his first home run of the season to get the Cubs on the board in the top of the second inning. Lisalverto Bonilla (1-0) allowed one run in three innings of relief and was credited with the win. Brett Jackson led off the top of the sixth inning with a triple and scored on a groundout by Brad Nelson.

Former I-Cub Nate Robertson pitched the top of the eighth inning and worked in and out of trouble to hold the lead. With one out, Jackson reached on a bunt hit and moved to second on a single by Donnie Murphy. With Nelson at the plate, Jackson broke for third before Robertson delivered the pitch. The lefty made an inside spin and threw to third base to catch Jackson for the second out of the inning, and then got Nelson to ground out to end the threat. Evan Meek finished the game and earned his second save of the year.

The Cubs and Express continue this series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Dell Diamond. RH Drew Carpenter (0-1, 11.25) will start the opener for the Cubs against RH Justin Grimm (1-0, 1.59) for the Express. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed at iowacubs.com with the pre-game show starting at 6:45.
