April 9, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
The Isotopes (4-1) dropped their first game of the season at the hands of the Omaha Storm Chaser (2-3) in an 8-7, 10-inning game. DH Max Ramirez (2-for-5) bombed a three-run homer in the tenth after the Chasers took a one-run advantage putting an end to Albuquerque's four-game winning streak. The extra inning affair took 3:34 to complete with 5,811 fans at Isotopes Park.
The Isotopes scored in the first inning for the third consecutive game getting to Omaha starter Brian Sanches early. SS Dee Gordon (1-for-5) led of the game with his second double of the season setting the table for 2B Elian Herrera. In turn, Herrera (1-for-5) singled to center field scoring Gordon for the first run of the game.
First baseman Xavier Nady (1-for-4) pulled the Storm Chasers even with the Isotopes at one with his second home run of the season. Nady, who has 10 years of Major League service, is hitting .471 (8-for-17) on the year.
Omaha took its first lead of the game in the top of the fifth inning touching up RHP Sean White for two runs. Nine hitter CF Willy Taveras (0-for-3) walked to begin the frame before a Christian Colon blast (1) to center field. The homer put the Storm Chasers in front 3-1.
RF Nick Buss (1-for-4) flashed some speed in the next half inning legging out a triple as the frame's lead-off hitter. Catcher Jesus Flores (0-for-4) grounded to short allowing Buss to cross home cutting the Storm Chaser's lead to one run.
The Storm Chasers took advantage of a Herrera fielding error in the sixth to expand on their lead. The Albuquerque second baseman ranged up the middle twice earlier in the game completing the putouts in a spectacular display of defense, but booted a grounder to him allowing Nady to cross home for a 4-2 Omaha lead.
First baseman Scott Van Slyke's hot bat carried over into the first game of the Omaha series. Van Slyke (3-for-5) doubled (3) and came around to score on a Matt Angle single, who advanced to second on the throw home. 3B Rusty Ryal (1-for-4) sent Angle home via a single tying the game at four. Van Slyke is batting average to .600 (12-for-20) on the year and hit a three-run blast (2) in the bottom of the tenth inning to draw the Isotopes to within one.
RHP Shawn Tolleson tossed 2.2 inning of scoreless relief, striking out three. The righty reliever has not allowed a run in 4.2 innings out of the pen this season. RHP Geison Aguasviva suffered the loss, after two of his inherited runners came around to score off of Josh Wall in the tenth aided by a Rusty Ryal error. After Omaha went on top by four in the tenth, the Topes responded with three two-out runs on a Castellanos RBI- single and Van Slyke's blast, but could not complete the comeback.
Both starters went five innings in Monday's game. Albuquerque RHP Sean White (5.40) allowed three earned runs on five hits while lefty Brian Sanches (3.60) gave up two runs on four hits. Neither hurler factored into the decision. Sanches retired 10 batters in a row stretching from the first to the fourth inning.
The Albuquerque Isotopes and Omaha Storm Chasers are back at it Tuesday, April 9 for the second matchup of the four game series. Isotopes opening day starter RHP Stephen Fife (0-0, 4.50) is slated to take the ball in his second start against Omaha's southpaw Will Smith (0-1, 3.60).
