Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - One night after a 13-run offensive explosion, the Round Rock Express used the long ball once again as the E-Train clipped Iowa 4-2 Tuesday night at Dell Diamond.
Round Rock's jump-start offense was at it again as first baseman Jim Adduci followed a one-out walk by shortstop Jurickson Profar with a two-run opposite field blast off Cubs starter Chris Rusin in the bottom of the first inning. Left fielder Aaron Cunningham followed with a walk and advanced to third after second baseman Yangervis Solarte singled on a liner to right. Right fielder Joey Butler hit a fly ball to right fielder Brett Jackson which was deep enough to allow Cunningham to tag and score for the third E-Train run of the first frame.
The I-Cubs responded in the top of the second when left fielder Darnell McDonald left the yard with a one-out solo shot to pull Iowa within two at 3-1.
McDonald's blast would be the only blemish on Express starter Josh Lindblom as the right-hander blanked the I-Cubs for the next two innings. Lindblom exited after the fourth, allowing just one run on three hits and striking out four. It was his first start since May 29, 2010 with the Albuquerque Isotopes (Triple-A affiliate, Los Angeles Dodgers).
Round Rock added a fourth run in the bottom of the fifth when Cunningham led off with a walk and later scored on a two-out double down the left field line by third baseman Mike Olt. It was Olt's second double of the season and his second hit of the night as a single in the third broke a 0-for-18 stretch.
Iowa cut the Express lead in half after Jackson lined a 3-2 pitch into the right-center gap and beat the relay throw to third for his first triple of the season. Jackson crossed the plate on a RBI ground out by first baseman Brad Nelson two batters later, making the score 4-2.
Four runs would be all Round Rock would need as Express reliever Lisalverto Bonilla replaced Lindblom in the fifth. The Dominican Republic native tossed 3.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits and registering three strikeouts in his second appearance of 2013. Bonilla's final out earned style points when Iowa third baseman Edwin Maysonet was robbed of a hit on a diving grab by Solarte to end the seventh, stranding a runner on second.
The Cubs attempted to mount a rally in the top of the eighth with runners on first and second and one out, but Express reliever Nate Robertson picked off Jackson attempting to steal third. The left-hander then forced Nelson to ground out to first, thwarting the comeback.
Right-hander Evan Meek picked up the save, his second on the season, with a scoreless ninth, earning Bonilla his first Triple-A victory. Rusin suffered the loss, dropping him to 0-1 in 2013. Olt collected his first multi-hit game of his Triple-A career, finishing the night 2-for-3 with a RBI and a walk. Catcher Jose Felix finished the night 2-for-4 in just the second Triple-A start of his career behind the dish.
The Express will go for the series win against the Cubs at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday night when E-Train right-hander Justin Grimm (1-0, 1.59 ERA) takes the hill. He will be opposed by Cubs starter Drew Carpenter (0-1, 11.25 ERA). Wednesday's game will feature a game show atmosphere as a part of Winning Wednesday which will include game show style promotions throughout the game, presented by Texas Lottery.
