Redhawks Even Series with Birds

(Sioux Falls, SD) – The Canaries had a tough day at the plate as the Fargo Moorhead RedHawks beat the Birds 9-1 and tied the series at two games apiece.

The RedHawks got off to a quick start in the first inning with back-to-back doubles by shortstop Bryon Jeffcoat and right-fielder Richard Austin. Left-fielder Eric Krause hit a two-run homerun as the Hawks posted five runs in the first.

The Canaries answered in bottom of the first when designated hitter Edgard Clemente hit an RBI single to score center-fielder Anthony Monegan to make the score 5-1.

Redhawks' center fielder Joe Mathis hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning to score first-baseman Clyde Williams and make the score 6-1. The Hawks added two more runs in the seventh when designated hitter Eric Kofler hit a sacrifice fly to score Jeffcoat and right-fielder Richard Austin scored on a fielder's choice to make the score 8-1.

The RedHawks added one more run in the eighth inning to make the score 9-1. The Birds had no answer as Redhawks reliever Josh Deetz shut down the offense in the ninth inning to clinch the game for Fargo Moorhead.

Canaries starter Julio Medina (1-3) took the loss for the Birds, pitching seven innings, allowing ten hits, eight runs, two walks, and three strikeouts. Matt Koziara made his second appearance this season for the Canaries, pitching two innings, allowing two hits, no walks, and one strikeout.

Redhawks starter Brandon Culp (4-0) got the win, pitching four innings and allowing just one run on four hits, four walks, and six strikeouts.
