Vipers Take the Rubber Match
June 12, 2005 - Northern League (NL)
Calgary Vipers News Release
Rain couldn't stop the Calgary Vipers from taking their second series victory of the season Sunday afternoon at Foothills Stadium over the Sioux City Explorers. A steady downpour ended the game prematurely after 7 innings with the Vipers taking a 9-1 victory. Northern League rules state a game can be completed if 5 innings have been completed. Jeff Brewer got the start for Calgary looking for his first decision of the season and he earned it in a big way. Brewer went 7 strong giving up just 3 hits for 1 run while 4 in the process. He now improves his record to 1-0 on the season in his second start. Sioux City starter Mike Natale takes the loss, as he was on the hook for 6 of the 9 Calgary runs. His record drops to 2-2 on the season.
At the plate, it was Calgary's day. Pedro Santana finished 3-5 including his 2nd homerun of the season, a 3 run shot to left field in the 5th. Santana batted in another in the 2nd to increase his RBI total to 8 on the year. JD Foust drove in his 13th while going 2-3 and scoring twice while Greg Morrison upped his RBI count to 20 with a ground out in the 4th. Morrison also extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a double in the 6th inning.
The Vipers now get ready for their first ever series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes. The 2 teams open a 3 game series Monday (7:05 pm, Foothills Stadium) playing through Wednesday before heading out on the road. Calgary will travel to Edmonton and Winnipeg starting on Thursday.
