Scoring all their runs in four innings the Calgary Vipers (2-1) defeated the Edmonton Capitals (1-2) 15-3 in Game 3 of the North Division Championship Series at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Offensively the Vipers jumped out early with three runs in both the first and second innings before five in the fourth to take an 11-0 commanding lead. Later Calgary scored four times in the eighth frame to round out the scoring. On the mound Mark Michael (1-0) allowed only three hits and one earned run in six and a third innings for the win. With the win the Vipers take a 2-1 lead in the best of seven series.
At the plate Chad Ehrnsberger and C.J. Ziegler led the way with four runs batted in and three runs scored respectively.
Calgary jumped onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning as Jonny Kaplan singled, Jimmy Rohan reached on a base hit, C.J. Ziegler walked to load the bases, Chad Ehrnsberger collected a run batted in base knock, and with two outs Lino Garcia singled in two for a 3-0 advantage.
The Vipers doubled their lead in the second frame when Mark Michael walked, Wilver Perez singled, with two outs Ziegler doubled in two after a seven pitch at-bat, and Ehrnsberger plated a run with a base hit for a 6-0 score.
In the fourth Calgary increased their lead as Perez followed by Rohan followed by Ziegler all walked to load the bases, Ehrnsberger drove in two with a double, Garcia was hit by a pitch to reload the sacks, Al Quintana walked for a RBI, and Kaplan collected a two-run base hit for a 11-0 advantage.
Edmonton got a run back in the fifth with a solo home run from Brent Metheny for a 11-1 score.
The Capitals plated another tally in the seventh when J.D. Closser singled, Steve Brown walked, Mike Hrynio also walked to load the bases, and Closser scored on a passed ball for a 11-2 game.
Edmonton got another run in the eighth as Jamie McGraw walked, Metheny singled, and Brown drove in a run with a base hit for a 11-3 score.
The Vipers got back onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth frame when Drew Miller walked, Quintana also reached a free pass, Derek Perren singled to load the bases, Bryan Burke drove in two with a double, Perren scored on a wild pitch, Perez walked, and Louie Templeton collected a RBI double for a 15-3 final.
Game 4 of the North Division Championship best of seven series will be in Calgary at Foothills Stadium on Friday September 2nd at 6:30 for Game 4. Game 5 will also be played in Calgary on Saturday September 3rd at 2:30.
If a Game 6 is necessary it will be back in Edmonton on Sunday September 4th at 2:00. If a Game 7 is necessary it will also take place in Edmonton on Tuesday September 6th at 7:00.
