Two out Rally Allows Six in Game 5

Allowing five home runs the Calgary Vipers (2-3) were defeated 12-6 by the Edmonton Capitals (3-2) in Game 5 of the North Division Championship Series at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Vipers led the game 1-0 heading into the sixth inning when with two outs the Capitals rattled off six straight hits for six runs and a commanding lead. Edmonton followed up with another four runs in the seventh inning on three home runs to further their advantage. Stephen Whalen (0-1) took the loss after allowing all six runs in the sixth inning. With the loss the Vipers now trail the best of seven series three games to two.

Calgary opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning as Wilver Perez reached on an error, stole second base, advanced to third base on a wild pitch, and scored on a Jimmy Rohan run batted in single for a 1-0 advantage.

Edmonton jumped onto the scoreboard in the sixth when Todd Linden followed by Brent Metheny singled, with two outs Carlos Duncan drove in a run with a base hit, Tom Collaro hit a three run home-run, Rex Rundgren singled, Lou Pote tripled for a RBI, and Steve Brown doubled in a run for a 6-1 lead.

The Capitals added to the lead in the seventh frame as Linden homered, Metheny walked, J.D. Closser hit a two-run home run, and Collaro hit a home run for a 10-1 advantage.

In the eighth inning Edmonton continued to score when Linden singled and Metheny homered for a 12-1 lead.

The Vipers got a couple runs back in the bottom of the eighth as Perez doubled, Rohan singled for a RBI, and Chad Ehrnsberger doubled in a run for a 12-3 score.

Calgary closed out the scoring in the ninth frame when Al Quintana doubled, Derek Perren singled, Perez reached on a wild pitched strike out which also scored Quintana, and Louie Templeton drove in two with a double for a 12-6 final.

Game 6 of the best of seven North Division Championship Series will be in Edmonton on Sunday September 4th at 2:00 and if Game 7 is necessary it will also take place in Edmonton on Tuesday September 6th at 7:00.
