Allowing ten walks the Calgary Vipers (2-2) were defeated 14-7 by the Edmonton Capitals (2-2) in Game 4 of the North Division Championship Series at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Vipers outhit the Capitals 16-14 but Calgary's pitchers walked ten while Edmonton's didn't walk one. Calgary also held a lead at 4-2 after three innings before giving up seven runs in the fourth and another four in the fifth to fall behind for good. With the loss the best of seven series in now tied at two wins a piece.
Dusty Gober (0-1) took the loss after allowing eight runs on six walks in three and a third innings.
Edmonton opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Enrique Cruz walked, Todd Linden singled, Brent Metheny walked to load the bases, and J.D. Closser collected a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 advantage.
Calgary quickly tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first when Jonny Kaplan singled, stole second base, advanced to third base on a Wilver Perez groundout, and scored on a Jimmy Rohan run batted in single.
The Vipers took the lead in the second frame as Lino Garcia singled, stole second base, Al Quintana collected a base hit, and Dusty Gober laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt on a suicide squeeze for a RBI and a 2-1 score.
The Capitals quickly tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the third inning when Steve Brown doubled and Metheny knocked him in with a RBI two-bagger.
Calgary retook the lead at 4-2 in the bottom of the third as Perez was hit by a pitch and C.J. Ziegler hit a two-run home run for his second long ball of the playoffs.
Edmonton responded in a big way in the fourth frame when Tom Collaro walked, Rex Rundgren singled, Rory Shortell laid down a sacrifice bunt while also reaching on a fielding error, Brown hit a grand slam, Cruz walked, Metheny also reached with a walk, Closser singled in a run, Duncan singled to load the bases, Collaro knocked in a run with a fielder's choice, and Closser scored on a wild pitch for a seven run inning and a 9-4 lead.
In the fifth inning the Capitals continued to score as Shortell doubled, Cruz hit a home run, Linden walked, and Metheny hit a home run for a 13-4 advantage.
Garcia got a run back for the Vipers in the sixth with a solo home run for a 13-5 score.
Another run was scored by Calgary in the eighth frame when Garcia singled, Quintana collected a base hit, and Kaplan drove in a run with a single for a 13-6 game.
Edmonton grabbed a run back in the ninth inning as Metheny singled and Closser doubled for a RBI and a 14-6 lead.
The Vipers closed out the scoring in the bottom of the ninth as Chad Ehrnsberger singled and Garcia doubled him home for a 14-7 final.
Game 5 of the North Division Championship best of seven series will be in Calgary at Foothills Stadium on Saturday September 3rd at 2:30.
Game 6 will be in Edmonton on Sunday September 4th at 2:00 and if Game 7 is necessary it will also take place in Edmonton on Tuesday September 6th at 7:00.
